Dear Mrs. Whalen and Family, Mr. Whalen was one of the few persons to have had a huge impact on my life. Before the end of his very first class in English at Wilcox Tech in the Seventies, I knew from Mr. Whalen's impressive love of English that I was going to get a BA debree in English, and become the writer I often thought I could become. Before the end of that one year of his course, I became even more determined to follow the course in life Mr. Whalen had inspired me to take. Once in class, after reading some of my poems and other writing, he commented that I might be a "budding genius in our midst," I don't know if I ever became a genius, but I have had plays on stage here in London, England, and a few things published, and the near-sale of a screenplay. Currently I work as a freelance writer, and just now I am waiting for news on some new scripts I've written, and on some poems and song lyrics. But back to the past, and the present: I have thought of Mr. Whalen many times over these many years. I remember his as being a wonderful humanitarian, as well as fully expert in his subject. He was kind and considerate to everyone. He and I met once or twice outside the class. As busy as he was, he took the time to inquire about my writing, and my friends who were also taking the course with him. He had a good word about everyone, and he was a phenomenally accurate judge of character. I am so glad I met him, and that he was my teacher, both for a year, and for all my life. I need to thank all of you for including in Mr. Whalen's memorial video a photo copy of a handwritten message to Mr. Whalen from me, sent some time ago, in which I tried to convey my appreciation to him for the teacher and fine human being he was, and now will always be in memory. My sincere sympathy to Mr. Whalen's family from a student of his from Westbrook High School. He not only taught us English, but he taught us to respect one another as everyone in his class was referred to as "Miss" or "Mr." He made a huge impact on me and my classmates and I often recall those wonderful years with this outstanding educator.
