Obituary of Jean May

Jean M. May, 88, formerly of 424 Country Club Rd, Cheshire, CT passed away Saturday April 26th, 2008 at The Mary Wade Home in New Haven, CT. She was pre-deceased by her husband Joe C. May, and her first husband Robert T. Coolidge. Jean was born July 17th 1929 in Kenosha, WI and was the daughter of Dorothy and Earl (Adams) McMullen. She attended the Swarthmore College in Pennsylvania, and also the Harvard Graduate School of Design in Cambridge, MA where Jean was in the first class of women to graduate from the school of design. Jean was an architect prior to her retirement in 1985. Jean was involved in many local organizations in Cheshire such as the Cheshire Grange, Cheshire Land Trust, and the Cheshire Town Environment Committee where she served as Chairlady. One of Jean's proudest activities was assisting in the preservation of the ridge land along the west end of Cheshire. Jean was involved with the Cheshire Peace Movement, and was a Peace and Anti- Nuclear Activist. In her spare time she was an artist, painter, and potter. Jean also worked the preservation of the Carousel at Lighthouse Point in New Haven, CT. Jean is survived by her sons Cyril J. and his wife Becky May of New Haven, CT . David B. Coolidge and his wife Ellis Waingrow of Newton Highlands, MA , and Robert and his wife Elizabeth Coolidge of Branford, CT. Jean is survived by her daughters Martha P. Coolidge and her husband Jim Spencer of California, and Lucy Coolidge of New York, NY. She is also survived by ten grandchildren. Jean was pre-deceased by her brother George McMullen.Arrangements- A Memorial Service will be held, Sunday, June 8th, 2008 at The Slater Funeral Home 242 South Main St Cheshire, CT 06410 from 10 A.M to 12 P.M. Burial will be held at the convenience of the family. The Slater Funeral Home 242 South Main St Cheshire, CT is in charge of the arrangements.
