Obituary of Don Powell
Naugatuck - Don C. Powell, 90, a resident of Naugatuck for over 60 years, died peacefully on Wednesday, May 21, 2008, at the Village of East Farms. Don was the husband of the late Kathryn Linhard Powell. He was a graduate of Sidwell Friends School of Washington D. C. and Wesleyan University of Middletown, CT. Prior to his retirement, he worked as a chemist at Uniroyal in Naugatuck.He was a long time faithful member of the First Congregational Church of Waterbury where he served on several committees. Don spent many hours giving back to the community, especially in the area of educational endeavors. He shared the produce of his well stocked garden with the various shelters and soup kitchens in the greater Waterbury area.Don Powell is survived by two sisters, Doris Schultz and her husband, Ruby of Virginia and Ann Mathias and her husband, Robert of Delaware. He is also survived by his children Raymond W. Powell and his wife, Janet of Watertown, CT; Rev. Clyde L. Powell and his wife, Phyllis of Citrus Springs, FL; Judith P. Gentile of Waterbury, CT; Janet A. Casey and her husband, Michael of Washington, NC; and, Don C. Powell, Jr. and his wife, Elizabeth of Saratoga Springs, NY. In addition, Don is survived by the following grandchildren: Raymond J. Powell and his wife, Janell; Tammy Bobel and her husband, Steven; Jeffrey Knight and his wife, Rosie; Jennifer Powell, William Powell; Bonnie Gentile, Mia Casey and her fiance David; Shannon Casey; Don C. Powell, III; and Kaylynn Powell as well as great-grandchildren: Raymond L. Powell, Riley Powell, Brinley Powell, and Demetri Gonsalez. He also leaves several nieces and nephews.A memorial service will be held at the First Congregational Church, 222 West Main Street, Waterbury, CT 06702 at 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday, May 27, 2008. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be sent to the First Congregational Church Scholarship Fund or the Ecumenical Food Bank 75 Spring Street, Naugatuck, CT 06770. The Alderson Funeral Home of Naugatuck is in charge of arrangements.
