Vic Power - Publican: Kevin Barry\ posted a condolence

I don't remember how long it's been since Joel and I met at Kevin Barry's. It must be 20 years or so. In the bar business, you never know who's missing until they show up. Then you say, "Hey - where's you been? How long's it been? How you been?" Jeannie is right when she says that the nights stretched on at Kevin Barry's. But with a guy like Joel, the time went by all to fast. He was always ready with a great joke or story. We always felt safe in Kevin Barry's when Joel was here - not so much because of his affiliation with the Air Force, but because we knew that if things got down and dirty and we ran out of ammunition, we could count on Joel's skills with the battle axe and broad sword. I know he wasn't Irish, but I think he would have had no problem handling the Irish pike. Everybody associated with Kevin Barry's at those times enjoyed his company and good cheer. He'll always be considered a member of the Kevin Barry's family. Jeannie, thank you very much for including the picture of Harry O'Donoghue and myself with Joel as part of his memorial video. We were honored. We're having a whack of rum in Joel's honor as I write these words. God bless.

My heartfelt thoughts and prayers are with the family. Godspeed on your journey Joel. We enjoyed manys a good night at Kevin Barry's in Savannah, filled with stories, music and laughter, all washed down with a few drinks. Joel was a good man and will be greatly missed. I will offer up a toast and a song in his honour. Harry O'Donoghue, Savannah, Georgia.

During my very wayward youth, I became friends with Jean, Joel, their family, and their flock of 2 legged, 4 legged and often no legged friends. Those were the good old days of open doors, cars stopping for kids, and dining at Dubrows. We spent long hours talking natural science, science fiction, political science, and most importantly, life science. Many lessons stuck and made me a better person today. We traded science fiction and comic books and not unexpectedly, I was usually beneficiary. Although distance and time drew us apart, Joel legends I most often share are as lizard wizard, Jeopardy winner and billboard celebrity. I'll never forget the day in Brooklyn I was almost run over by a bus with Joel's mug on its side. As I reeled back out of the way, I was watching his face go whizzing by. The world is less for Joel's passing and my sympathies to all who are missing him today. Joel was a brazen outspoken hero that I am lucky to have known and shared time with.

Jean, Family & Friends: My heartfelt condolences go out to everyone on your loss. Reading the obit made me feel like I knew Joel even though I have never met him. They say that life is not about how long you live but how you live the time you were given and Joel certainly took advantage of the time he had. He hardly left any stone unturned. Good for him! Sorry again for your loss. Bob Weber
