Obituary of Myrtle Swanson

NAUGATUCK- Mrs. Myrtle (Sweeney) Swanson, 94, of 180 Scott Rd., Waterbury, and a former resident of Walnut Terrace. in Naugatuck, died peacefully Friday afternoon, May 8th, 2009 at the Waterbury Hospital. She was the widow of William H. Swanson, who died in 1971, following 30 years of marriage. Mrs. Swanson was born in Watertown, May 11, 1914, a daughter of the late Richard and Rebecca (Downs) Sweeney. She attended local schools and was a graduate of Watertown High School. She was employed by Waterbury Tool and Die prior to her marriage to husband in 1941 at Christ Episcopal Church in Watertown. She was a lifelong member of Hillside Covenant Church in Naugatuck where she served on the Board of Trustees, the Diaconate and Christian Education. She also volunteered at the Waterbury Hospital Gift Shop for over 30 years. She leaves her daughter, Karen S. Oakes and her husband Joseph J. Oakes of Morrisville, VT; one son, William D. Swanson of Beacon Falls; two grandchildren, Matthew J. Oakes and his wife Eva L. Oakes of Denver, CO, and Jennifer O. Holland and her husband D.B. Holland of Mesa, AZ; 2 great-grandchildren, Trey and Jordan Holland whom she dearly loved. She was a loving person who cared dearly about her family. Myrtle enjoyed gardening, traveling, cross word puzzles, and feeding the birds in her back yard. She will be missed by all whose lives she touched. Funeral services will be held on Friday May 15th at 2 pm at Hillside Covenant Church. Burial will follow in Grove Cemetery, Naugatuck. There are no calling hours. The Alderson Funeral Home of Naugatuck, 201 Meadow St. is in charge of arrangements. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Hillside Covenant Church, 100 Hillside Ave., Naugatuck, 06770
