Obituary of Joseph Scully

Joseph W. Scully was born at 244 Prospect Street, Union City, Aug 16, 1914, a son of the late Patrick E. and Minnie (Gilson) Scully. He attended Prospect Street Grammar School and Naugatuck High School. Joe was the youngest of eight children. He was predeceased by his brothers, Francis, Matt, Leo, James, Thomas, Bill and his sister, Margaret. Joe's grandfather Michael Scully came from County Tipperary Ireland onboard the James Nesmith arriving in Boston on June 30, 1856, first settling in the Mendon, Blackstone Valley, MA., where he met and married Margaret (Naughton) Scully, moving to Union City circa 1875. His maternal Grandfather Christopher Gilson came from Athboy, County Westmeath, Ireland in the 1840's. First moving to Norwalk and later to Union City where he met and married Margaret Ellen (Daly) Gilson. After graduating from High School, Joe went to work for UGI Gas Company in Waterbury as Stock Boy and later sold vacuum cleaners for the Imperial Vacuum Co. For many years, Joe worked at Eastern Malleable Iron Company as a Patten Maker. He later joined his brother Matt at "Matt Scully's Victoria Inn" in Union City, working there until his retirement. Joe has been an active member of St Mary Church, Union City for all his life. He is also a 3rd Degree Life Member of The Knights of Columbus Ojeda Council #33, Naugatuck, CT. Joe was honored on St. Patrick's Day in 2008, when he was named, Naugatuck's Union City Irish Mayor for the day. His hobbies included trout fishing and traveling the Northeastern United States and Canada. Joe is survived by his nieces and nephews, Ellen Scully of Union City, William J Scully Jr. of Waterbury, Thomas J Scully of Prospect, Burgess, Patrick J. Scully Sr., and James M. Scully Sr. both of Naugatuck , Mary Scully of Hartford, and Victoria Oakes of Bantam, and several other Great and Grand nieces and nephews. His funeral will be held on Saturday February 13, 2010, at 9:15am from the Alderson Funeral Home of Naugatuck, 201 Meadow St. to St. Mary's Church, 338 North Main St., Union City for a Mass of Christian Burial at 10am. Burial will be in St. James Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home on Friday Feb. 12, 2010 from 6 to 8 pm
