Greg & Paul (and families) My deepest sympathy and condolences in the passing of your mother. She was the nicest and most wonderful woman. I lost my Dad back in the 80's and know the empty feeling that will always remain in your heart. I apologize for missing the service, I only read about it today in the paper. I work for a law firm that has been on a trial the past 2 weeks for which I have been just working and sleeping and out of touch with the outside world. I hope the 2 of you are doing well. Again, my deepest sympathies. Robin (Smith from Beacon) Trzaski Prospect, CT

I was inspired with a story written by one of Josephine's former piano students. Josephine was my Godmother and my first piano teacher from age 4 1/2 to about 8 years of age.
"Godmother" in the Italian culture has a very special meaning--it is a second mother. She was so much more than that to me visiting and staying with us every summer while my mom tried to find enough piano students to keep her busy.
I recall that infectious laugh of hers and her love of languages--As a four year old, I recall our laughing uncontrollably over the pronunciation of French words she was trying to teach me.
Later it was diligent piano practice along with the best training one could have as a beginner. I am the only one in the family to become a professional pianist after her. There is an incredible bond between teacher/mentor and student!!!
As the years past with both our lives dedicated to motherhood and teaching piano, we shared visits by phone because great distances separated us. She was the consummate mother and teacher always supporting her "sports oriented" sons along with her dedication of 57 years to her class as a great teacher in Naugatuck.
In our later years we shared time reminiscing along with our aches and pains. We made a point in every conversation to find humor about something in our lives and ended with an "I love you". Though I am 72 now , I will cherish the memory of those phone visits in my heart and will hear her wonderful laugh preserved forever in the sound and light of my mind's eye.
Yes, her great performance pieces were the Malaguena by Ernesto Lecuona and the Rituel Fire Dance by Manuel De Falla. She will be so missed!!!!!!!!!!

Dear Paul and Greg, My heartfealt condolences on the loss of your mother. I took piano lessons from her for 7 years...such a wonderful, kind and inspirational teacher. I have so many fond memories of her and still enjoy the songs that she inspired me to play. I'm happy that she enjoyed a long life and stayed close to her family whom I know that she was devoted to. She left a mark on many, many lives and I'll never forget her. Sincerely, Tina Zollo Weinstein. (Mike and Tony's sister)

Dear Greg, Paul, Mrs. Lamanno, and all your family, It was with a heavy heart that my Dad, Mario, told me of Mrs. Mencio's passing. Mrs. Mencio was a second Mom to me, and our piano lessons always consisted of some treat that she made after the lesson. We had many fun times around her kitchen table, and she and her husband were always included in the Valiante gatherings. I owe much of what I am to her, especially the wonderful years of piano lessons. In preparation for my audition to the UCONN Music Department, Mrs. Mencio honoured me with a lesson with her teacher, Miss Castegnetta. Mrs. Mencio was there for my UCONN Senior recital, and we shared many wonderful times in the years after. I always made sure to see her whenever I returned to the States after moving to Australia. It is a sad day for all of us, however, the world is a kinder and better place because she graced. Love and prayers all around to all of you. Much love, Sandy ox

We were so sorry to hear that Mrs. Mencio passed away. She positively touched the lives of many people during her many years of teaching and even later in retirement. She was extremely proud of her two sons and all of their accomplishments, and her love and pride extended down to their families. I (Laura Genua) studied piano with Mrs. Mencio for many years and even came back to her for support in preparing for my senior piano recital. I enjoyed out time together at the piano and our trips down to Dunkin Donuts for treats. After I graduated and married, we kept in touch and had our get-togethers with Mr. & Mrs. Mencio. After moving to Florida, we continued to keep in touch, and even my two sons had the pleasure of spending time with Mr. and Mrs. Mencio on our visits back to Connecticut. I often quote Mrs. Mencio when teaching my own students. I will greatly miss her. I am proud to have had her as a teacher and mentor, and will always cherish the friendship that we shared.

I just wanted to say how much Josephine touched the lives of so many young people. I took piano for many years making the trip with my mom to Naugatuck which was unfamiliar to me at that time. It is now where my home is and often thought about Josephine as I drove past the house. My sympathy to the boys.

Dear Paul and Greg, I had the distinct privilege of taking piano lessons from your mother from 1954 to 1963. You were little boys during that time. I am so thankful that my parents offered me the opportunity to take piano lessons and that I was able to do that will your mother. She set in motion something that I have enjoyed for a lifetime. Thanks to her it is hard to imagine a life without playing the piano. As a typical boy taking piano lessons, I was more enamored with the loud, showy, noisy classical pieces. In spite of her many attempts, I never really would learn Debussy’s Clair de Lune. About 10 years ago, more than 35 years after ending piano lessons, I learned the piece and, on a trip to Connecticut I visited your mother and played Clair de Lune for her, much to her delight. We both recognized how this completed something that was started many years prior as teacher and student. I visited her one more time after that for a long afternoon filled with much talk about her life and family, especially her boys. I am privileged to have know her and to have called her my piano teacher – I have had only one piano teacher, her. With condolences in your time of grief, Tom
