I was also one of Nancy's roommates in college and loved how he would let her know how much he loved both her and Jeanne, with no holds barred. On the weekend of Nancy and Rick's wedding we stopped in at Scully's to say hello. Mr. Havlick was so welcoming to us and so excited about the weekend. He said, "We are so happy you are here. This is going to be a great weekend." He then gave me and my boyfriend (now husband) both big hugs. And it was a great weekend. Mr. and Mrs. Havlick always made me feel welcome in their home and their town. I will remember his expertise and interest in many areas (cars... safety... boats... country music... ) and, most of all, that he was a fantastic Dad.

Pretty much on many mornings I would meet John, Al, Toby and others at Napoles Bakery, now Shef's Bagels. Conversation would range from cars, car parts, boats, Montauk, happenings around Cheshire, family, even other parts of the country and the world sometimes. I was always interested in what John had to say. I learned he was a man of convictions, solid in his views and generous towards others. There was respect in his words for others; an honest anger, sometimes, for a few.
I learned from John the way to earn respect; the benefits of honesty; a passion for hobbies and the love of family.
I learned alot at 6:30!

My best memory of John was on our first voyage to Montauk with our new boat. We all started out of Chrisholm Marina together and soon found out that our radio wasn't working and we didn't have reverse in one of our engines. After having to wait for us for over an hour, John said "follow me, I'll get you there." Sure enough he made sure he didn't go too fast and he kept us close to him.
When we arrived at Montauk, John docked his boat first then ran over to make sure we made it into our slip.
We all had a wonderful time that weekend getting to know each other.
When it was time to leave there was a threat of bad weather, John made sure we all left together, we all made it back to Chrisholm safe. (although we did forget to wait for Joe -but thats another story)
Thats the kind of person John was, always concerned about the other person. The world was a better place with him in it. He will be missed by many.

My heartfelt condolences to you all - Roberta, Jeanne, Nancy and family. I am Nancy's friend in Portland, OR. I had the honor of being Roberta and John's house guest twice, once for Christmas, and they were both the nicest people I'd ever met. Jon was a wonderful person; funny, warm, opinionated. I had a great time talking with him around the dinner table. I'm so sorry for your loss. Roberta, my thoughts are with you. I know you have a strong network of friends and family there, and I hope that provides much comfort and help in the days ahead.

We have so many beautiful memories of our 20+ years of boating with Jon and Birdie. When our son, Geoffrey, was little he was always walking up and down the docks with his fishing pole in hand. Jon would always take the time to stop what ever he was doing to see how Geoff was doing. When our daughter, Kelly, learned a new dance, he was always there to watch her dance in the back of the boat and cheer her on. Jon quickly became Ray's best friend, and the two of them could get into "trouble" without even trying. We've enjoyed so many vacations, cookouts, dinners, weddings and holidays together. Whenever we were together, a good time was a definite. Just recently, Birdie said, "boating friends are the best friends", and I think she is right. We will miss you Jon, nothing will be the same. This summer, we will go to Montauk and sit at the bar at Star Island and have one for you. Rest in peace my dear friend.

I lived with Jon's daughter Nancy in college. One thing I loved about living with Nancy was hearing her father's messages on our answering machine. They were so warm, so sweet, telling Nancy that he loved her multiple times. I loved knowing how well loved Nancy was by her dad. I also remember Nancy telling me that her dad used to make her pack a smoke detector in her bag when she stayed away from home. This detail always seemed to me evidence of his deep care for his daughter. As everyone reading these stories knows, the Havlicks are an amazing family. I am grateful for the time I got to spend with them as Nancy's friend.

Jon was such a wonderful man. Aside from being a long time friend from the the Cheshire fire departmement (who taught me so so much and was a mentor) he was a good supplier and the most honest and fair man I knew. I learned a lot from him. I hope he did not suffer much as I had heard he was sick. Dearly missed never forgotten. I would love to know of any future plans so I can pay my respects. God Bless you all.
