Obituary of Dorothy Stein
HAMDEN- Mrs. Dorothy (Krinsky) Stein, 97, of Hamden, and a former Waterbury resident, passed away peacefully at her home on Sunday afternoon May 1, 2011. She was the widow of Morris Stein.
Mrs. Stein was born in Bridgeport Mar, 19, 1914, a daughter of the late Max and Anna (Markowicz) Krinsky and had been a Hamden resident for the past 5 years. She was a graduate of Crosby High School and the Conn. College for Women in New London. An English major in college, after graduation, she entered Yale school of Nursing and became a Registered Nurse. She worked at the Henry St. settlement in New York City as a visiting nurse. In 1938 she married Morris Stein and settled in Waterbury.
Her life was devoted to social justice and helping the unfortunate. She volunteered for many organizations, including the Red Cross, Cerebral Palsy Assoc. and agencies in the Jewish community, the League of Women Voters and many others.
In the 1960's and early 70's, she was very active in the anti-Vietnam War movement, protesting weekly on the Waterbury Green. She was also very active in SANE, working to eliminate nuclear testing.
She is survived by her 3 children, Frederick Stein of Cheshire, Dr, Stephen Stein, MD of Milford, and Nancy Becker of Wolcott; one sister, Sylvia Stein of Torrington; 8 grandchildren, 2 step-grandchildren; 6 great-grandchildren and 1 step-great-grandchild. She was predeceased by a brother, Benjamin Krinsky.
A graveside service will be held at 12 noon on Tuesday May 3, 2011 at Melchizedek Cemetery, Plank Rd., Waterbury. Shiva will be observed at the home of her daughter Nancy Becker, 26 Tunxis Rd, Wolcott on Tuesday evening at 7 pm. The Alderson Funeral Home of Waterbury, 9 Holmes Ave, is assisting the family with the arrangements.
