Obituary of Robert Moseley
CHESHIRE; Robert Edison Moseley of Cheshire passed away Monday, June 13, 2011 at the age of 95. Robert was the son of Arthur and Jenney Nugent Moseley, Seymour, CT. Robert was a resident of Elim Park in Cheshire, CT, where he lived the past 10 years. He and his late wife, Lois, were Cheshire residents for 61 years.
Robert graduated from Seymour High, Seymour, CT and The Worcester Academy, Worcester, MA. He attended the University of Vermont, a member of the Army ROTC, and served in the U.S. Navy during World War II as a Seaman 1st Class Radar Officer. He continued his education at Northwestern University with a degree in Electrical Engineering, and obtained his Masters in Education at Central CT State University in New Britain, CT, and received an Honorary Doctorate from the University of New Haven. While a student at UVM, he met Lois Marsh Jackson; they married in Brattleboro, VT in 1940. He is predeceased by his wife Lois (married for 62 years), sister-in-law Sylvia Goodwin Jackson, and two grandsons; Dain MacClelland Moseley and Gregory Scott Rancourt.
His survivors form a large and diverse family, including two sons, Richard Jackson Moseley and his wife Anne of Harpswell, ME and John Robert Moseley and his wife Gloria of Cheshire, CT. He leaves behind five grandsons, John-Albert Moseley and his partner John Nowacki of Hartford, CT; David Moseley MacClelland and his companion Sharon and children Victoria and Ethan of Plainfield, CT; Jason Moseley MacClelland and his wife Jennifer and children Ricky, Connor, and Brady of Long Meadow, MA; Jeremy Moseley and his wife Laura and son Noah of Brooklyn, NY; Zachary Richard Moseley with wife Jessica and son Casey in New York City. Granddaughters included Patricia Ann Cargill, her husband Fred and sons Matthew, Jacob, and Nicholas. Nancy King and her husband Robert with children Amanda, Joshua and Meredith of Short Hills, NJ; and Laurie Hardy with husband Jerry, and children Russell and Nicholas of Topsham, ME.
Robert had a distinguished professional career in both Engineering and Education. He worked in Electrical Design at the Bristol Company in Waterbury, CT; held positions as a Plant Watch Engineer for the New England Railroad, worked for CL&P, Chase Brass & Copper and General Motors. He retired in 1981 as a teacher from Eli Whitney Vocational High School, New Haven where he taught in the Electrical and Physics Departments.
Robert was a Scottish Rite 32nd Degree Mason, and was a member of Temple Masonic Lodge in Cheshire. He and his wife Lois were Charter Members of the Cheshire Square Dance Club and members of the First Congregational Church. Together, they wintered at Victoria Palms in Donna, TX from 1986 to 2000. He was an avid hobbyist which included wine making, gardening, cultivating roses, and photography. He made great contributions as an F.C.C licensed wireless radio operator (WA1/ZLF) and was a member of the Quarter Century Wireless Association, the Radio Relay in Newington, CT, and a volunteer with the Civil Preparedness Radio Communications Network. A musician, he played trumpet with the Governors Foot Guard Band, the Meriden City Band, and the Cheshire Community Band. As one of the first residents of the new Elim Park community, Robert was active on several residents committees, and helped to organize the annual pool tournaments.
Robert Moseley will be missed by his family, Mason Brothers, radio colleagues, former students, and his many friends in Texas, Maine, Cheshire, and the Elim Park Community. A memorial service, including a Mason Service, will be held in Nelson Hall at Elim Park Baptist Home 140 Cook Hill Rd., Cheshire, CT on Monday, July 11th at 1:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Benevolent Fund at Elim Park, in memory of Robert Moseley. The Alderson Funeral Home of Cheshire has care of arrangements.
