Obituary of Ellen Merkle
WATERBURY- Ellen (Robinson) Merkle, 99, passed away peacefully Tuesday October 21, 2014 at Griffin Hospital. She was the widow of Francis J. Merkle.
Ellen was born May 21, 1915 in Waterbury to the late James D. and Eileen (Reilly) Robinson. She was a graduate of Sacred Heart High School. She worked for the City of Waterbury Welfare Department, Harris Transducers in Woodbury and finally Colonial Bank in Waterbury, from which she retired in 1977. Ellen lived in Southbury, and later Smithfield Gardens in Seymour, however, she spent most of her life in Waterbury. She was a former communicant of St. Leo the Great Church in Waterbury, and loved reading and doing crossword puzzles in her free time.
Ellen is survived by her step-son Robert Merkle of New Bern, NC; two step-granddaughters - Kirsti and her husband Keith Harris of Front Royal, VA and Karen and her husband Mitch Shalom of Orangeburg, NY ; a step-grandson Robert Merkle Jr. of Southport, NC; two nephews - James D. and his wife Linda Robinson of Waterbury, and Stephen and his wife Susan Robinson of Glastonbury. Several cousins; a grand-niece Katherine and her husband Matthew Walas; a grand-nephew; Scott Robinson, and great-grand-nieces, great-grand-nephews as well as step-great grandchildren. Ellen is predeceased by her brother, James D. Robinson.
