Miss Leggett was VERY special to both of us as our elementary language arts teacher at Mary Abbott School (class of 1961 and 1971) and as our mentor. We had visited her several years ago at Visitation Plaza and we always sent her our annual Christmas greetings. When our Christmas card was returned back to us this year, we knew that something was wrong. We are so very sorry to read about her passing today. We would have attended her funeral if we had known sooner. She was a wonderful inspiration to us (being both teachers) as an exceptional, dedicated educator as well as a kind, caring friend and person. She will be greatly missed but forever remembered in our hearts. Our deepest sympathy to her family and friends.
Miss Leggett, we will always love you!

Dear Ruth,
thank you for being present, via long distance, in the lives of me and my family. You were always loving and thoughtful. You made a lasting impression on me when I first learned how your former students held you in the highest esteem. I think you helped a lot of people. Thank you for your kind thoughts and good advice in your letters. Love you.

Ruth was a kind, caring generous woman who loved her family and loved God. She overcame a lot in her life. She was a strong woman who always pushed for everyone to increase their knowledge through education. Ruth loved to write her notes and hear how everyone was doing. She always projected an upbeat and persevering attitude. She will be missed
Rest easy Ruth.
Love,

Miss Leggett was my English teacher at Mary Abbott school many, many years ago. She was a very hard and strict teacher but I learned a lot from her. The few times that I ran into her, she would always say hello and remember who I was. When both my parents passed away within nine (9) months of each other, she sent a note of condolence for both of them. May she rest in peace. My prayers go out to her family.
Sincerely,
Susan D'Amelio Stango

Miss Leggett was my 5th grade teacher at Mary Abbot school many, many years ago. When I still lived in the Cooke St. neighborhood I would sometimes see her walking and would always remember her fondly. She was a strict teacher but something about her made you like and respect her and you knew she had a kind heart. I will always be grateful to her for remembering my father when he passed away 11 yrs. ago. My family had not seen her for some 40 yrs. or so but Miss Leggett made sure to remember my father and my family with a sweet note of condolence. It made such an impression on all of us to think that she would remember us lovingly after so many years. We will never forget that gesture of kindness and will always remember Ruth as a gracious and dignified woman way beyond her years... May she rest in peace. Our deepest sympathy to her family.

Miss Leggett was one of the best teachers ever....
Her memory was outstanding. I remember a class reunion (Mary Abbott School) at Quassy she came and remembered the names of about 99.9 % of all who attended. When reminiscing of my grammar school days her name would always be mentioned. She was a very special LADY.....God Bless her for all her good works my sympathy to her family. May God bless you all

My mom's (Patricia Allman LeVine) cousin makes Ruth my first cousin removed. However, this feels too much like a peer, instead I view Ruth as an authority figure keeping watch of faith-family-English diction-results- and personal integrity.
A classic "New England-er", fiercely independent, tough, and kind. She valued faith, education, family, and personal responsibility. To these, she delivered every day of her life. I have learned from her diligent letter writing, to use the gift of a letter for communication of loyalty, love, and commitment. I take solace and comfort knowing that Ruth never asked for or needed much but took great pleasure in exchanging letters from family about everyday events of life. To that end we knew her well and will miss her, think of her, and remember her.... particularly during this and future Christmas Holiday Seasons.
Rest in Peace Ruth
