Obituary of George A. Jensen
CHESHIRE - It is with heavy heart that we announce that George A. Jensen 80, surrounded by his loving family, passed away at Waterbury Hospital Wednesday January 21, 2015 after a lengthy illness. He was the husband of Cynthia M. (Michaels) Jensen.
Mr. Jensen was born May 17, 1934 in the New Haven to the late Joseph and Mary (Conniff) Jensen. He graduated from Yale University in 1957 with a degree in foreign languages. He then developed a career in the banking field working in both domestic and international finance for Second New Haven Bank, Colonial Bank and Trust, Bank of Boston, finishing as President end CEO of the Bank of Hartford.
Following his retirement he worked as a Consultant for the International Executive Service Corporation, a Stamford based overseas business services organization comparable in its mission to the Peace Corp. His assignments with IESC took him to foreign countries to spend about 6 weeks with various overseas banking organizations to prepare sophisticated management and business plans. He also worked for several years as a consultant for OverSeas Development Corpporation in the public relations field in many of the soviet countries.
His travels took him to locations such as Nepal and different Russian areas (Siberia). He was passionate about different cultures and traveled overseas whenever possible. His favorite activity was cooking for 6-10 friends and family every Friday night and for summer vacations at Bear Island in Maine.
George was a longtime Cheshire resident and 50 year member of St. Peter's Episcopal Church serving over the years as Vestry Board Member, Treasurer and Chief of Acolytes. He was also active in Cheshire Community Theater and the Connecticut Horse Shows Association for ten years as Points and Membership Administrator.
Besides his wife and best friend of 53 years, Mr. Jensen in survived by his daughters Kristin J. Bures and her husband Craig of Prospect and Karin Jensen of Cheshire, and his grandchildren Ian and Alik Bures. He was predeceased by his son, Erik A. Jensen. He is also survived by his sister Marion Jensen Murray and husband John of Springfield, Vermont, as well as several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his brother, Joseph Jensen, Jr.
Arrangements - A Memorial Service will be held at 12:00 pm on Saturday, January 31, 2015 at St. Peter's Episcopal Church, 59 Main Street, Cheshire. Burial will be held at the convenience of the family. Visitation will be held on Friday the 30th from 4-7 pm at the Alderson-Ford Funeral Home of Cheshire, 615 South Main street. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to the St. Peter's Church Memorial Fund.
