EULOGY (6-CONT) And in our quiet evening conversations on the back deck with coffee and cigarettes, Tom would talk about how he enjoyed watching the cardinals, chickadees, mourning doves and squirrels in their play, and his ability to converse with God, as he had always done, "his way."
Today in the spirit of Tom's celebration for a long journey of love and soul, amidst his clan, his network, his tribe, his family, we make a loud and heartfelt plea to the Lord:
Station Heaven, Open Alpha Gate. Open Omega Gate. 505 aka Captain Murphy aka Papa Smurf aka Thomas Francis Paul Murphy, Himself, To be sure, is coming home.
Rest in peace, Tom. May perpetual light and chocolate cupcakes be yours for eternity.
All my love, "your bride," Moe

EULOGY (5-CONT) but did routine rounds, both inside the institution and to the outside shops; taking time to know those who were working with him in their respective stations. Tom was a man who yielded 100% of himself to the job because he wanted to; because those officers with whom he worked meant so much to him, that he wanted to ensure their safety; no blue shirt to be left behind; no preventable tragedies to occur on his watch. And many of the officers were motivated to also give 100% to the job because of fear of disappointing Tom; some offering themselves like sacrificial lambs, after making a minor, foolish mistake for the Captain to deliver a bip to the back of their heads with his famed correctional ring.
Upon his retirement, Tom enjoyed time with the family and laboring in the yard. He loved planting his yearly New Guinea Impatiens and mowing and watering his front lawn to perfection, even during the height of the summer heat. (Continued)

EULOGY (4-CONT) I heard Samson-like accounts of Tom picking inmates up by their shoulders and tossing them to awaiting officers to be escorted to Segregation or a galley cell. What impressed me most, was not the portrayal of Tom's muscles, but his ability to direct where each restrained inmate would be returned to housing, without allowing for any recurrence of uprising; a phenomenal feat of leadership and intellect that reflected a mastering of strategy, with an inmate census that flexed between 14 and 1500. But there were also stories of Tom's paternal side to oversee the professional and personal well-being of those female and male officers under his charge. So very proud was he, when those under his tutelage were promoted to the ranks of Lt, Capt., Major and even Warden; and so very saddened when some of his young officers passed from life prematurely. He was not one to hide in an office; (Continued)

EULOGY (3-CONT) Raised by politically active parents who were staunch patriots, Tom was proud that he had served in the United States Marine Corps Reserve and would call Correctional officer Kerry Austin, his golf partner, best friend and fellow Marine, to wish him "Happy Birthday to the Corps," every November 10th.
Second only to his family, Tom was most proud of the twenty years that he served with the CT Department of Corrections, from his beginning, couple of years at Whalley Ave in New Haven to his many years at the "Big House," Cheshire Correctional Institute, where I met Tom on the night shift, in September, 1989. From the beginning, it was evident to me, that Tom was well respected and well feared and yielded influence within the galleys and concrete walls of the prison. Stories raged of Tom's undaunted nature and valor to quell the riots in the dining hall and crush the gangs from gaining collective power. (Continued)

EULOGY(2-CONT) And if you failed to correctly guess his heritage from his name, he'd be sure to enlighten you that he was 100% certified Irish-American, second generation; "Get it right," he used to say. "Thomas Francis Paul Murphy, Himself, To be sure." Tom possessed an unwavering sense of righteousness and justice, where everyone deserved his respect. He would always say, " It's when I'm not teasing you, that you need to beware. I only razz the ones I love."
There were many achievements that Tom accomplished; achievements that spin a legacy of focused pursuit and passion by a man with strong convictions. Tom would always highlight his sports prowess; pointing out that he was a member of The Five Iron Men for Hamden High, during the 1956-1957 basketball season; emphasizing that the distinction of Iron was because there were no substitutions in any of the games; that he and his 4 teammates played each and every second of every game. EULOGY OFFERED 03/30/2015
Jane Howard, noted journalist and author of " In Search of the Good Family," wrote, " Call it a clan, call it a network, call it a tribe, call it a family. Whatever you call it, whoever you are, you need one." Today, as we gather to pay our last respects and tributes to Tom, the only child of Frank and Mary Murphy, it is evident that he found family and network in every area of life that he walked; people whom he loved dearly and people who loved him back, just as dearly. Tom possessed that right stuff, that right charm to work any room he entered; flashing a huge smile that was magnified and echoed in his baby, blue eyes; eyes that he was always proud to have others notice (especially if you happened to offer the comment that he looked like Kenny Rogers or Sean Connery.) Tom constantly delivered spontaneous quips that often became lifelong Tommy-isms and prankish ploys, unleashed by the leprechaun in him (Continued)

Thomas Murphy aka "skipper" I recall the very first time we met on my first day at the Rock. From that moment to this I've considered you a friend, brother and mentor. Success in my career is a direct result of you and many others time and effort in mentoring us younger troops. I always admired your work ethic and sprit of humanity. So many great times, they are hard to remember. Rest in piece my brother. Your rest is well earned.

Tom you were the glue that held a facility like the "ROCK" together. When a problem arose you were the one everyone turned to. You always knew what to say. You were soft spoken but we all knew where we stood with you. You never had a bad thing to say about anyone. You are free to go now and live in paradise with our savior Jesus Christ. RIP Tom you'll be missed by all of us.
