Walter Cheetham had a lifelong impact on me. I walked into the SCSC Special Education offices in 1976, looking for the Speech and Language Department. He greeted me and when I asked for directions, he said, "You don't want to do that. Let me show you what you want to do." He led me to his office and told me about a career in Special Education, working with students with learning and behavioral difficulties. It sounded like a good fit, so I signed on. I have had a fulfilling life because of that day. I met my husband at SCSC during my student teaching, and have taught in Connecticut, Western New York, and the last 22 years in Maine. But the most memorable moment during my years at SCSC happened when I was struggling financially, and was living, literally penniless, in an unheated building because I didn't have rent money. I went to see Walt about setting up my student teaching. He looked at me and as I was leaving, he took out his wallet and put a $5 in my pocket. That gift enabled me to buy a large bag of rice and cans of gravy that fed me for a few weeks until my circumstances improved. Walt was a "Most Unforgettable Character" in my life and a powerful role model. He was observant, saw need and reponded with kindness.
I still rmember his birthday with memorial giving, as he gave so much to me.

I was deeply sadden to hear of Professor Cheetham's passing. He was my advisor, teacher, and friend. We met while I was a student at SCSU. We knew each other for many years. I have never met such a giving and loving person. I think of him often and I am blessed to have known him. I became a Special Ed teacher and I am able to make an impact in my students' lives because of what he taught me. He will be forever missed and he will live on in my heart. Until we meet again in heaven...

Georgette my deepest sympathy on your loss of Walter. I always remember Walter as a warm & caring person who always had a beautiful smile on his face. Who can forget him. He was a blessing to everyone he met. May your many pleasant memories of your life together help get you thru this difficult time.
Heaven has gained an angel. An angel that God gave us for so many years. He was the most kind person I ever met. I met my papas at Thompson Candy retail store, exactly in July 5 years ago. He used to come here to buy chocolates for so many people. And the jelly beans for his wife. Always gave him my discount since he was so generous to other people. Of course I had to do something for him always.
I met his wife Georgette. He used to take her every day for lunch. Oh what a great man we lost. He was so caring, kind, funny, always had a wonderful story to tell and so much more. I went to his house a few times to help him. A couple of times I brought 2 of my sons to his house which he was so happy to see. He told them so many stories of when he was in the service and what he was teaching. I loved to hear his stories. So many he had to tell. Because of so many inspiring stories he told my sons, one of my sons is now serving in the Army. He recently joined the army this year. He told me he always remember what Walter told him. I loved the way he always talked about his wife.
We miss you so much. Now you watch over all of us from heaven.
Love you my papas.

Walter
He was like a grandfather to me!
He taught me so much.
I meet him later on in life. He was the kindest person I have ever meet. It never mattered who he talked to. he would poor out his love on everyone Nurses, waitresses, cashiers, pharmacist. Walter was truly one-of-a-kind!
I meet him while I was working at cvs in Cheshire. He use to go into the drive thur and bring a pizza or some gourmet chocolates.
One day at worked he asked me to come over and help him put in his eye drops in. Normally I would have said no way. However your can tell he was harmless and he really needed help, plus he always had an interesting story to tell. We became friend on the very first visit. He had story's to tell and I think for him it felt good to let them off his chest. He had story's about his mother death, his bothers, house work, school, serving ,taking a rocket to the back while saving someone else, Working in the prison, Meeting his wife on the row boat, Getting his doctorate, his daughter and also about his grandsons. He told me How excited he was about his new book. How honored he was to become a professor of Meritus at SCSU. Out of all things he loved renewing his vows.
One thing I didn't like was he always try to give me money. His time was all that I found valuable.he gave me hope that good men still exist

I was deeply saddened to learn of Walter's passing, and offer my deepest sympathies to his family.
Walter was not only a teacher of mine at SCSU, he was a mentor and an advisor. He took the time to counsel and advise, not only me, but all of his students. He was a "teacher's teacher." More importantly he instilled in his students a deep understanding of and respect for "special" students.
He truly made this world a better place.

Dear Georgette, Louise and Family,
I am very sorry for your loss.
Walter was very kind and generous with his time to my family when I was a young mom. He came to visit my older son when he was starting Kindergarden and reassured me about his development, he also set me on the right path for my younger son when our Pediatrician had a 'wait and see' attitude.
I'm sure there are many, many families who could tell a similar story, but I couldn't thank him enough for his help.
My thoughts are with you during this diffiucult time.
Maureen Ward and Family.

Dr. Cheetham took me to various special Ed classes in ct. I was a student in the late 60's and did not know if special education would be my passion. This kind man showed me that, indeed. It would be my life. It was my passion.
I taught special Ed for 39 years in CT. I gained so much from my students and will always be indebted to such a fine professor.
