I began my professional career at Wolcott High School in 1959. It was the best ten years of my career thanks to the educational climate and sense of family that was promoted by Nick D'Agostino and Larry Shapiro. I can honestly say that I never worked in a more caring and professional experience. Larry and Debbie were the classiest and kindest people I have ever meet. They will be missed and remembered.

I am a 1973 graduate of Wolcott High School. I spent 4 years starting my day hearing Mr Shapario's voice. He taught me what he expected as a student of Wolctt High. He was a man who we all looked up to. I never remember him raising his voice, however if someone did something wrong he would let the entire student body know how disappointed he was.
He was a kind and caring man and a very fair man. He will be missed, we need more people in this world like Mr Shapario, it would be a better place.

Me Shapiro was a very important role model for me. I was going through a difficult time and he always provided a positive and caring persona. Even at this point in my life I appreciate how he influenced me and how thankful I am that happened. I went on to teach 30 years in Watertown. Then 11 more years at a community college in South Carolina. Thanks to his belief in me I was on the way to a successful life. May he rest in peace. James Malloy Wolcott HS '64. .

I am a memher of the Wolcott High School Class of 1968. How we admired Mr. Shapiro first as assistant Principal then Principal. We were one of the few classes that enjoyed his example of integrity and a heart that truly cared for the students he greeted everyday as they entered the building for 6 years. 7th grade until we graduated.I will never forget him, & my memories of him will be a treasure as your memories will be to you
May grace & piece be yours & when I get back to CT., I will leave a smooth piece of red sea glass at his place of rest so you will know I was there.

THIS IS A CONTINUATION OF MY ORIGINAL MESSAGE (already posted)..... Russ Johnson
Judy, back in the summer of 2009 I spoke with you when I was making plans to take your Dad with me to see a cadet parade at The United States Military Academy at West Point. My daughter was beginning her second year there as a cadet, Class Of 2012, and there was a family picnic following the review on The Plain. I thought your Dad would enjoy going, and I sent him a letter to that effect. At some point prior to picking him up at Heritage Village, you called me and told me that he had early stages of Alzheimer's. I think you and I also spoke again several days later, and I had kept your phone number with other items on the cork board in my home office. The day that I spent with your Dad went well; we talked about all manner of things and he really enjoyed the visit to West Point, as well as meeting my daughter and several of her friends and lacrosse team members. He was at ease with me, spoke clearly and in great detail about his early years, growing up in Waterbury, his time in the U.S. Navy, family, and much more. That was the last time that I saw him, and I am happy to have spent that day in his company. My wife and I moved to Delaware in July, 2011, and as a consequence of packing for the move, etc., I lost your phone number.
You are fortunate to have had your Dad for so many years, and I hope that my descriptions of various interactions with him are well-received. I shall remember him as a patriotic American whose personal message, through the eloquence of his words and the quality of his deeds, was to always do the right thing.

My condolences to all family members. Mr. Shapiro is perhaps one of if not the best teachers I've had at WHS. Great class lectures and presentations too, especially when he wrote on the black board right handed and then left handed. His duties has principal made it not possible for him to teach. Unfortunately many students did not have the great experiences of his class room.
I will always have great memories of Mr. Shapiro.

I extend my sincere sympathy to your family for the loss of your father and grandfather. I became superintendent in Wolcott after Nick Dagostino retired and did not have the privilege to work with Larry in the Wolcott schools. Never-the-less, his impact was constantly evident in the school - from the high expectations for deportment of students and staff, to the culture of excellence and high learning expectations he desired. He was always the consummate educator. I did get to know Larry and Deborah quite well over the years at many social events, both personal and professional. He was always a gentleman but with a wry sense of humor. After we all retired, Larry, Nick, Bob Carroll, Bob Gerace (and sometimes others) would meet for lunch at San Marino's in Waterbury several times every year to offer our solutions to the educational challenges of the day and reminisce with great fondest how we contributed to 'the Wolcott way." It was at these meetings that we joked and laughed and really got to know and enjoy each other apart from our professional lives. I remember when Larry told us that he would be moving to Sudbury to be closer to his daughter - what a sad day for us. As Nick would so often say and I now repeat for him - we celebrate the life of a GREAT AMERICAN - our lives are all the better because he graced our presence and even more so because we could call him our friend.
With my prayers and best wishes,
Tom J.

I was a student at Wolcott High School from 1964 to 1968. Mr. Shapiro was Assistant Principal at the time. He had a major impact on my development. I was impressed by his intellectual rigor, he was obviously a smart man and I admired him for his unstinting insistence on excellence in discourse, written or spoken. I have carried that with me as in inspiration since.
