Obituary of Edith McLellan

Edith Beatrice McLellan, 94, passed away Tuesday, March 8, in Stuart, Florida. She was born February 11, 1922 to Alice R Stanley and Walter A Gibbs in Hamden, Connecticut. Formerly from Cheshire, Connecticut, she had been a resident of Stuart for many years. She was married to Richard P. McLellan for 58 years. They had two children, Brenda and Richard (Dick). Prior to her retirement, Edith was a Products Engineer for Whitney Blake Wire and Cable Company in Hamden, Connecticut for 35 years. She was involved in Girl Scouting, the founder and first president of the Suburban Garden Club, Cheshire, and a judge for the Connecticut Garden Club shows. She was a member of Laurel View and Sleeping Giant Golf Clubs and played into her 90’s at Monterey Yacht and Country Club in Stuart. She was an avid gardener, bridge player and traveler, visiting Europe and Scandinavia, the British Isles, Egypt, Alaska, the Panama Canal and many years visiting Montana and the Northwest. Edith was a member of the Episcopal Church, active in Women’s Guild and Altar Guild at St. Peter’s, Cheshire, and St. Mary’s, Stuart. She is survived by her daughter, Brenda J. McLellan, of Stuart, and one sister, Catherine Downer and her husband Donald, of Guilford, her daughter-in-law Arleen McLellan, 7 grandchildren and 5 great- grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Richard, her son, Dick, her parents, Alice and Walter Gibbs, brothers Walter and Eugene Gibbs and sister, Bessie Mappa. Arrangements – Funeral Service will be held on Thursday, March 17, at 11 a.m. at St. Peter’s Episcopal Church, 59 Main St., Cheshire with viewing will the held in the church narthex from 10:00-10:45.
