Obituary of Sarah Buell

Sarah Jeffers Buell, 95, of Naugatuck, CT died peacefully March 29, 2016 at Glendale Health Center in Naugatuck, CT. She was the wife of the late Sherman R. Buell, former Vice Chairman of Colonial Bank in Waterbury, CT and a long time community leader in Naugatuck. Sarah was born August 28, 1920 in Hartford, CT to the late Marjorie Pran and Frederick L. Jeffers. She grew up in West Hartford where she graduated from William Hall High School, and from the Edgewood Park School in Briarcliff Manor, NY. She moved to Naugatuck in 1945 after she was married. She was a member of The Highfield Club in Middlebury, The Junior League of Waterbury, The Mattatuck Museum in Waterbury, and The Congregational Church of Naugatuck. She was a Sunday School teacher and a Girl Scout leader for years. Sarah had many interests including gardening, interior decorating, playing tennis (until she was 85), traveling the world with her husband and their good friends the Van Allens, antiquing, playing bridge and playing backgammon (until days before she died). Being creative was a major part of her life - arranging flowers, knitting, finding the perfect gift, and writing beautiful letters. She loved nothing better than to browse through flea markets and tag sales. For years she organized the white elephant table at the Congregational Church Fair with her close friend, Anna Lee Van Allen. She was an avid reader on many topics throughout her entire life. She spent many summers with her family on the beach in Quonochontaug, RI, where she loved to look for shells and chard. Sarah taught her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren social graces and the ingredients for a successful life. She is survived by her daughter, Marjorie Buell Edmunds and her husband, Mark, of Dover, NH; her son, Jeffery R. Buell, and his wife, Sara, of Cheshire, CT; and her son, Richard L. Buell of North Kingstown, RI. She was predeceased by her sister Letitia Jeffers Cossette, of Virginia Beach, VA. In addition she is survived by eight grandchildren: Jonathan Edmunds, Sarah Edmunds MacKinnon, Ruth Edmunds Rossi, Elizabeth Buell VanDahm, Christopher Buell, Alexander Buell, Maggie Buell and Hannah Buell; and seven great grandchildren. Sarah’s family wishes to thank all the staff at the Glendale Health Center for their loving care of Sarah during the past two years. A memorial service will be held at the Naugatuck Congregational Church, 11 Division Street, Naugatuck at 3PM on Saturday April 2. In lieu of flowers contributions may be made to The Congregational Church of Naugatuck, CT and the Howard Whittemore Memorial Library in Naugatuck, CT. The Alderson-Ford Funeral Home, 201 Meadow Street, Naugatuck, is in charge of arrangements.
