Obituary of Al S. Fishman
PORT CHARLOTTE, FL - Al S. Fishman, 101, formerly of Miami, FL, Southbury, CT, and Brooklyn, NY passed away Monday, September 4, 2017 in Port Charlotte, FL. He was the husband of the late Amee S. (Krakoff) Fishman.
Mr. Fishman was born August 20, 1916 in Bronx, NY, the son of the late Harry and Mae (Frank) Fishman. He was educated in the NYC school system, graduated from City College and served in the Army Air Corps during WWII. During his years in New York, he was the owner and operator of Fishman Supply Company for many years, the President of the Bay Ridge Community Council in 1970, and active in many community groups.
In 1975, Mr. Fishman and his wife moved from Bay Ridge Brooklyn, where they raised their two children, Jerry and Cary. In Connecticut, they were members of the former Temple Israel of Waterbury and then members of Temple B’Nai Israel of Southbury. He was a member of the Masonic Order of the Bay Ridge Lodge #758 and King Solomon Lodge #7 in Woodbury, CT. Before moving to Florida in 2008, Mr. Fishman was recognized as Volunteer of the Year by the Region 15 school system.
Mr. Fishman is survived by his son Jerry Fishman and his wife Diane of Brooklyn, NY; his daughter-in-law Susan Fishman Ben-Chitrit of Guilford CT; Julie (Fishman) Berkowitz and her husband Jason and 2 great-grandchildren, Chloe Alexa and Dylan Matthew all of Miami, Fl. He was predeceased by his son Cary Fishman. His siblings, Edith and Jeanne, have all passed. The family will remember him always for his love, generosity, active mind, and amazing sense of humor.
A graveside service will be held 1:00 pm on Wednesday, September 6, 2017 at Melchizedek Cemetery, Plank Road, Waterbury. The Alderson-Ford Funeral Home of Waterbury 496 Chase Ave. is assisting with arrangements. Memorial contributions may be made to scholarship funds for the children at LONG ISLAND HEBREW ACADEMY , 122 Cuttermill Road, Great Neck, NY 11021.
