Obituary of June Shalagan

CHESHIRE - June Shalagan, 92, passed away Tuesday, December 5, 2017 at her home with her family at her side.  She was the wife of the late John T. Shalagan.

Mrs. Shalagan was born June 4, 1925 in Prospect, the oldest of three children of the late Herbert and Anna (Brewster) Barnhart. 

She was a longtime Cheshire resident since 1955.  She was a graduate of Sacred Heart High School in Waterbury and received a bachelor’s degree from Danbury State Teachers College in 1947.  She went on to receive a master’s degree in education from the University of Connecticut along with two sixth year degrees in education from Southern Connecticut State University, all of which were utilized in her 39 years as a teacher in the Waterbury school system at Chase School until her retirement in 1989.  She was a communicant of St. Thomas Becket Church where she also taught CCD for many years.

Mrs. Shalagan is survived by her sons Robert and his wife Deborah and their children Evan, Ryan and Emma of Cheshire and Stephen and his children Amanda and Michael of Cheshire; her daughter-in-law Claudette Shalagan of Cheshire; her brother Harold Barnhart of Wolcott as well as several nieces and nephews.  Besides her parents, Mrs. Shalagan is predeceased by her sister Lorraine Thayer.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, December 9, 2017, 10 a.m. from the Alderson-Ford Funeral Home of Cheshire, 615 South Main St. to St. Thomas Becket Church for a Mass of Christian burial at 10:30 am.  Burial will follow in St. Bridget Cemetery.  Visitation will be held on Saturday morning at the funeral home from 8:30 a.m. until the procession leaves for the church.  For online condolences, to share a photo or a story, please visit www.fordfh.com.
