Even though it was against the cemetery’s rules to let pets out of the car, I thought that Denise would love to see Joey (and that he would want to be with her) one last time. After walking around on the road, we stopped at her grave site for a few minutes.
When I thought it was time to leave (i.e., before we got caught), I stood up and started walking toward the car. Joey hunkered down in defiance, as Denise has seen him do hundreds of times.
I tried to pull him three times and then finally just stopped, waited and dropped his leash. Joey sat down on the ground and didn’t move.
I walked away. Joey just watched me and stayed right where he was.
As Denise knows, Joey is not one to stay in place when asked, so the fact that he didn’t follow me or go in the other direction was a miracle in itself. I watched him as he looked around--his nose twitching as he smelled the spring air—perfectly content to be next to his best friend in the whole world.
After about five minutes of this peaceful quiet, I went over and gave him a big hug and lots of kisses on his face like Denise would have done. He then stood up with me and walked back to the car.
We will always love and miss you, Denise. You will forever be Joey’s aunt, our friend and such an important part of our lives. Until we meet again…

I just want to give my deepest condolences for the passing of Denise. I worked with Denise directly at a company called Fitscript to help her better manage her diabetes through exercise. She was the first client I started with almost a year ago. She had actually texted me on February 28th letting me know that she was in the hospital and planned on missing appointments. Since then I followed up with her a couple of times with no response leading me to think the worst, and it was unfortunately true. She never ceased to make me crack a smile and always had me looking forward to her next visit. She would talk about her family often and of course her 3 cats. Denise was certainly a fighter all the way and I consider myself very lucky to have met and worked with her. She will be deeply missed by the Fitscript community.

I met Denise in 1998 when we worked at Temple Eye Physicians. She would quickly become a major fixture in my life when my mom passed away a year later. I had left the practice and she found out from a co-worker that my mom passed. She called to giver her condolences and from that moment on we began a friendship that would span over twenty years.
She helped me though many troubling times in my life along with several milestones. Her persistence and strong will forced me out of my comfort zone and allowed me to do things that I never thought possible. After living together in her condo in Branford she convinced me to join the United States Navy so I could further my career in healthcare.
From that moment I left I could tell that a piece of her left with me to Great Lakes. We stayed in contact though various means until I graduated boot camp and headed to my first duty station at Naval Air Station Lemoore. During this time I would need her more now than ever being thousands of miles from home. If it wasn't for Denise pushing me to join the Navy, I would have never met my rock, my best friend, my husband Erik. He was the only guy in my life that Denise ever truly liked and trusted with me.
For all these things I will be forever grateful. You were there to push me when I didn't think I could go any further. You were the strongest women I ever met and the sweetest. You may have had a tough exterior but you loved as tough as you were. You will forever be missed. I feel like a piece of me is missing now and there is a hole in my heart that can't be filled. I know I have to move on but I am not sure how. I called you for advise on every little thing. I will remember all the things you taught me. I will cherish the great times and your memory.. you will forever be with me.. I LOVE YOU DENISE AND YOU CAN NEVER BE REPLACED.

My husband and I met Denise through the Meriden Humane Society in 2013. She helped us adopt our dog, Joey. Joey had a very hard start to his life and does not like or trust many people. Denise loved Joey, and Joey loved her. I would say that Denise truly was his favorite person.
When we adopted Joey, Denise became a part of our family. She was always willing to watch him when we went away and celebrate his birthdays with us. We’d email back and forth, and she stayed connected as his Aunt Denise.
Joey strongly dislikes riding in the car but always wags his tail when the car turns onto her street, and he puts his face up to the window when she walks up the driveway. Despite his aggressive history, Denise always gave him hugs and kisses on his head, which he loved.
Ironically, Denise’s last weekend at home was spent with Joey. Even until the very end, she shared her love and kindness for him and for us.
I still can’t believe you are gone, Denise. It is because of you that we have our special fur boy. We will miss you so much and will do our best to carry on your memory and loving example.
Rest in peace, Aunt Denise. We love you. ❤

Dear Greg and Dawn, We were so sorry to hear of Denni's illness and passing. Denni was a beautiful person inside and out, She really was a woman of many talents: gardener, animal lover and nurturer, carpenter and culinary artist. She had a determined, practical character and faced any situation with candor and common sense. The video tribute was so moving, seeing photos of everyone in both California and Connecticut. So many great memories of fun times such as sleepovers, Masquamicut, and art shows. We send our condolences to both of you as well all of your children and grandchildren. Such a tragic loss, too soon. Sending love and prayers, Adrienne and Jim

A beautiful life taken much too early. We were so saddened to hear of Denise's passing. I have been thinking of all the memories when I was a young girl and she worked for my parents, bringing laughter and that smile to the office. We are so sorry for your loss. May she rest in peace.

We are deeply sorry for the lost of our beloved cousin, Denni. Over the years, we enjoyed so many great times with her during the holidays and for birthday celebrations. Denni always made such delicious treat for us, most memorable her tomato soup cake. She loved her family, her friends, and most of all her cats and Joey. My daughters always looked forward to seeing her every Thanksgiving. Denni will be greatly missed.
We were in awe of her strong and determined fight up until the end. She is at peace now and with her mom and dad. Rest in peace, Denni. Love always, Moira, Joe, Tara, Megan xoxo
