Obituary of Herbert E. Schlander
MERIDEN- Herbert E. “Herb” Schlander, 94, passed away Friday July 20, 2018 at MidState Medical Center. He was the husband of the late Louise (DeCola) Schlander.
Herb was born on January 30, 1924 in Waterbury, the son of the late Robert and Violet Schlander and was the second of three children. After graduating from High School in Waterbury hr joined the Marines where he proudly served during WWII. He was injured in combat and was a survivor of Iwo Jima. Years later he was honored at Cheshire High School for his outstanding service and sacrifice to our country.
After the war Herb married his childhood sweetheart and ultimately settled in Cheshire to raise their four children. Herb worked at Waterbury Farrel where he spent his career as a supervisor.
Upon his retirement he and his wife moved to Ocala, Florida where they spent many years together enjoying retirement.
After the loss of his wife, he moved back to Connecticut to live with his daughter Mary until he moved to The Bradley Home and Pavilion in Meriden where he spent his remaining years.
Herb absolutely loved The Bradley Home, the staff and residents as well as the many activities that were available to him. His love of life flourished there.
His family would like to thank the entire staff at The Bradley Home for making his stay so enjoyable and in particular, Administrator, Molly Savard and Associate Administrator,
Anne Dembski.
Anyone that was fortunate to have known Herb was impacted by this kind man who thoroughly loved his family, friends, and country.
Herb is survived by his sons, John Schlander and his wife Robin of Southington, James “Chip” Schlander of Jefferson, Maine, his daughters Betsy Walesky and her husband Don of Cheshire, and Mary Niezgorski of Southington. Also, leaving behind his grandchildren Chris and Pat Walesky, Mark and Jason Niezgorski, and Shea and Jason Schlander as well as his four great grandchildren, Samuel, Nathaniel, and Eliana Walesky, and Olivia Schlander.
Arrangements- Funeral Services will be held on Wednesday July 25, 2018 at 11am at the Alderson-Ford Funeral Home of Cheshire, 615 S. Main St. Burial with Military Honors will follow in St. Bridget Cemetery. Visitation will be held on Wednesday from 9am until the start of the service at 11. Memorial contributions may be made to the Bradley Home, 320 Colony Rd., Meriden, Ct. 06451 or to the V.F.W. Post 10052, 60 Pound Ridge Rd, Cheshire Ct, 06410.
