Obituary of Maureen E. Ford
NAUGATUCK - Mrs. Maureen E. (Hughes) Ford, 71, of Naugatuck, wife of John W. Ford, passed away July 22,2018 at her home.
Maureen was born in Mahopac, NY, July 31, 1946, daughter of the late Joseph C. and Mary (Stokes) Hughes and was raised in Brewster, NY. She was a graduate of St. Lawrence O’Toole Grammar School and Brewster High School, Class of 1964 and was a graduate of Duchess Community College with a degree in Retail Business Management and the former Mattatuck Community College with a degree in Early Childhood Education. She has been a Naugatuck resident since 1972. She was a department manager of the former G. Fox Co. in Waterbury and later was employed by the Naugatuck Board of Education as a Para-Educator in Special Services, retiring in 2001 with over 16 years of service. From 2007, until May of 2014 she served as Corporate Secretary of The Alderson Funeral Homes, Inc.
Maureen was a former President of Local 1303-50 A.S.C.E.M.E. of Naugatuck and was a former member of the Pension Board for the Borough of Naugatuck. She was a former sustaining member of the Junior League of Greater Waterbury, a former Girl Scout Leader and Cookie Sale Chairwomen for the CT Trails Council, Girl Scouts. She was a past Co- President of The Salem School Parent School Association, and the former founding Co-President of the Hillside School Parent-Teacher Group (C.A.R.E.). She was also a past Co- President of the Naugatuck High School Parents Group and a Past President of the Naugatuck-Parent School Council. Maureen had served as a member and Chairperson of the High School Cafeteria Building Committee. Maureen and her husband were honored by the Parent School Council as recipients of the Raymond K. Foley Memorial Award in 1996. She was also a member of the Ladies Ancient Order of Hibernians of Naugatuck.
In December of 1988, Maureen and her husband organized the first annual Christmas Day Dinner for those that would otherwise be alone. They continued to Co-Chair the event each year, expanding the dinner to include elderly shut-ins and local police and firefighters that could not spend the holiday with their families. They stepped down as Co-Chairpersons in 1995, and were succeeded by the Kelly family, but continued to volunteer at the dinner for several years. They were named Chairmen-Emeritus following their retirement.
Maureen was a communicant of St. Francs of Assisi Church. She enjoyed crocheting and needlepoint and counted cross-stitch and had won several awards for her cross-stitch work in Juried exhibits. She was an avid Peanuts collector getting her hands on anything that involved Snoopy.
Besides her husband John of 47 years, she leaves her children, Daniel J. Ford and his wife Danielle of Cheshire and Joanna M.” Jodie” Ford-Segetti of Naugatuck; her sister Joan Harrison-Boughton of FL; her 3 grandchildren Ryan and Emma Ford and Kyle Segetti and two nieces Cynthia Mahoney and Andrea Semprevio and her nephew Michael Harrison. Besides her parents, Maureen is predeceased by her sister Marion “Cissy” Semprevio.
The family would like to acknowledge and thank Dr. Kurt Sabbath and the staff of Smilow at the Leever Center and Dr. Mark Kraus and his staff, and the Nurses and Aides of Hartford Healthcare at Home-Hospice for their support and attentive care of Maureen during her illness.
Arrangements – Maureen’s funeral will be held on Friday July 27th at 10:15 am from the Alderson-Ford Funeral Home of Naugatuck, 201 Meadow St. and proceed to St. Hedwig Church, 32 Golden Hill St. for a Con-celebrated Mass of Christian Burial at 11 am. Entombment will follow in Queen of Peace Mausoleum at Calvary Cemetery, Waterbury. Friends may call at the funeral home on Thursday July 26th from 4 to 8 p.m, Memorial contributions may be made to St. Francis of Assisi Church, 318 Church St. Naugatuck, 06770 or the Harold Leever Cancer Center, 1057 Chase Parkway, Waterbury, 06708 in her memory.
