Mr. Schurk has been one of my parent's best friends forever, longer than I've been alive, and I'm not young. He and his wife Connie (Mrs. Schurk to us) spent many evenings at our home when we were children and we saw them every year at the t-club outing. Of note, Mr. Schurk helped Dad to build our bedrooms. Our home in Milford came with an unfinished upstairs and I was told (too young then to remember) that they worked together to build the two rooms when our family exceeded the space downstairs. He also made the very unique room divider in our house. I wish I had a picture of that, and will try to get one. It was built in a special way that it could be used to divide the living room and dining room, or moved back along the wall when we needed to expand the dining table for company. Mom displayed her cherished items on one side and used the other as a bookcase. It held the set of World Book Encyclopedias that we used for homework every night, looking up the answer to some question one or the other of the four of us had. The room divider was a very special piece of furniture. When Mom and Dad sold the house, we showed the realtor how it worked, and it was one of the selling points of the house. Somehow I was fortunate enough to become the recipient of one of his cutting boards, pictured here well-loved and used with my Lagouille and Cutco knives. I use it every night for chopping vegetables or nuts or slicing cheese. I have not seen Mr. Schurk for many years but warm memories will always remain in my heart.
