Obituary of Robert I. Bernstein

With sadness, we note the loss of Robert Bernstein, of blessed memory. His loss is mourned by his loving wife, Estelle Lax Bernstein, numerous nieces and nephews, extended family and a community of friends.

Bob was the consummate New Yorker, growing up in Brooklyn, going to school in New York and living on the West side of Manhattan for most his life. The City was his place.

Bob had a keen mind which he applied to the financial operations of the City of New York. As the Chief Auditor in the New York City Mayor’s Office of Operation, he tracked and reported on the effectiveness of implementing the city’s administrative policies into operations. He loved understanding the complex mechanics of how the city worked and served under the Koch, Dinkins, Giuliani and Bloomberg administrations.

Bob was an avid sports enthusiast with a lifelong love of running and golf. His favorite places always had a beautiful but challenging golf course. He treasured his time in Bellport and visiting family. He also had a passion for his New York baseball and football teams, retaining an encyclopedic knowledge of a lifetime of game and player statistics.

With a dry and perceptive sense of humor, he was known to readily and capably reach out to offer a helping hand to family, friends and community alike. His loving spirit will be greatly missed.

Mr. Bernstein’s Funeral will be held at the Alderson-Ford Funeral Home of Waterbury, 496 Chase Avenue, Waterbury, CT 06704 on Sunday, November 11, 2018 at 10:30AM.  Burial will follow in Beth El Cemetery, Boyden St., Waterbury.
