Obituary of David P. Reed

MIDDLEBURY - David P. Reed, 84, passed away Saturday, November 17, 2018 at Waterbury Hospital.  He was the husband of Joan (Moeckel) Reed.

Dr. Reed was born November 26, 1933 in Waterbury, the son of the late Harry and Olive Hotchkiss (Bates) Reed.  He graduated from Naugatuck High School Class of 1951.  He went to UCONN in Waterbury before transferring to Storrs and graduated in 1955 with a double major.  He furthered his education graduating from Yale Medical School in 1959.  Dr. Reed had a solo practice specializing in Internal Medicine for many years before joining Alliance Medical Group.  He retired from medicine in 2009 after 50 years of practice.  He went on to teach courses in Eastern European, Russian, and Italian history at the UCONN Waterbury branch as part of the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute program for many years.

Dr. Reed and his wife have been extremely generous over the years donating countless dollars to Waterbury Hospital to enhance its Surgical Center as well as establishing the Reed Cardiac Dept. in 2005.  In 2014 Dr. Reed and his wife donated a million dollars to create the first teaching fellowship at the UCONN Waterbury Campus.

Dr. Reed was an active member of Hillside Covenant Church where we held many positions including Usher, Trustee, Deacon and Chairman.  The Reeds had three exchange students from Scandinavia, each for a year, and also hosted youth workers from Hillside Church.  He was an avid bicyclist and completed many 100 mile and 200 mile rides with the New York Cycle Club.  He thought nothing of biking to their cabin in New Hampshire.  He was a model train enthusiast and collected trains for all of the countries he visited.  He enjoyed traveling, especially to Fitzwilliam, NH and climbing Mount Monadnock.  Prior to any trip out of the country, Dr. Reed would study so that he would be able to converse in any country he visited.

Besides his wife, Dr. Reed is survived by cousins scattered around the U.S. including Bill Middelthon of Coral Gables, FL and Robert Hair of Williston, FL.
