Obituary of Irene Luria

Mrs. Irene (Fritzka) Luria, age 90, of Highland Beach, FL and formerly of Waterbury passed away on Tuesday, January 1, 2019 at her home.  She was the wife of the late Dr. Sidney B. Luria.  Mrs. Luria was born in Waterbury on June 2, 1928, daughter of the late Samuel and Mary (Preslopsky) Fritzka.

Irene was a 1946 graduate of Wilby High School and the Waterbury Hospital School of Nursing, Class of 1949.  Irene was a clinical instructor of the Operating Room Surgical Procedures at Waterbury Hospital and nursing counselor for the Class of 1961 and Class of 1964.

Mrs. Luria was actively involved in the nursing profession for many years. She was a member of the CT Nursing Association, the American Nursing Association, Waterbury Hospital School of Nursing Alumni Association, where she had served a term as President, and a member of the Waterbury Hospital Medical Auxiliary.

Irene was a member of the MoriKami Japanese Museum in Delray Beach, FL and the Holocaust Museum of Washington, D.C.  She was a member of the Country Club of Waterbury, where she was the President of the Nine-Hole Golfing Group and also a member of the Boca Raton Resort and Club, where she was the President of the Avis Golf League.  Irene was a member of the B’Nai Shalom Synagogue, B’Nai Shalom Sisterhood and a lifetime member of the Hadassah, she also enjoyed many interests, to include, cooking, golfing, traveling and needlepoint.

She is survived by her nephew, Michael Chernik and his wife, Jill, and their daughter, Natalya of Cheshire; her niece, Sharon Kirk and her husband, Richard of Lake Worth, FL; and her niece, Nicol Rock of Concho, AZ.  She was predeceased by her sister, Olga Chernik; her brother, Walter Fritzka; her sister-in-law, Adrienne Goldberg; and her grandnephew, Alex Chernik.

Her funeral service will be held at the Alderson-Ford Funeral Home of Waterbury, 496 Chase Ave., CT 06704 on Tuesday, January 8, 2019 at 1PM.  A Graveside Service will take place in Arlington National Cemetery, Washington, D.C. On Monday, February 4, 2019 at 11AM (Please meet at the Administration building at 10:45AM GPS Address-1 Memorial Drive, Fort Myers, VA 22211) .  Memorial Contributions may be made to the Dr. Sidney B.
