Obituary of Jean S. Oberst

Jean "Ginger" (Schorer) Oberst, age 94, of Cheshire died peacefully on Saturday, January 12, 2019 at MidState Medical Center in Meriden.  She was the devoted wife of the late E. Ernest Oberst for nearly 70 years, until his passing in 2014.  Ginger was born on October 22, 1924 in New Haven, daughter of the late Donald P. and Bertha A. (Atwood) Schorer.

Ginger had a lifelong appreciation for animals, and the Oberst household served as the foster home for a variety of orphaned baby wild animals.  Over several decades, she remained in contact with the West Rock Nature Center in Hamden.  She was a dedicated wife and mother, and a generous person, always doing for others.  Ginger was a member of DAR, Daughters of the American Revolution, an organization she was proud to belong to for over 70 years. She had a radio show on WELI for some time in the 1940s, where she also reported the traffic.  An accomplished pianist, she gave piano lessons at home to local students in the 1960s.  Later in life, Ginger worked for 14 years as the school secretary at Chapman School.  She took particular enjoyment in spending weekends at the Oberst's lakefront cottage in Otis, MA, where she and her husband Brud brought their family, from the 1960's to the present.

Ginger is the beloved mother of William E. Oberst and his wife, Gail of North Adams, MA and Nancy Oberst Clark of Cheshire; loving grandmother of, Catherine Eastman and her husband, Scott of St. Augustine, FL; Gregory P. Clark of Sandy Hook; Leigh Faust and her husband, David of Kuwait City, Kuwait; and Rachel S. Clark of Brooklyn, NY.  She also leaves her cherished great-grandchildren; Rainer Eastman, Bradley Faust and Natalie Faust.  She was predeceased by her daughter, Carolyn Oberst Belue; her grandson, Scott E. Clark; and her son-in-law, Dennis P. Clark.

Friends may greet Ginger’s family at the Alderson-Ford Funeral Home of Cheshire, 615 So. Main St., Cheshire, CT 06410 on Saturday, January 19, 2019 from 9AM-11AM.  Her funeral service will begin at 11AM at the funeral home.  Burial will be private and at the convenience of her family. In lieu of flowers, memorial scholarship contributions may be made to the Daughters of the American Revolution, Lady Fenwick Chapter, and mailed to: Lady Fenwick DAR Chapter Scholarship Committee, 3 Wyndemere Court, Cheshire, CT 06410.  To leave online condolences for her family, please visit www.fordfh.com
