Obituary of Russell Baril

CHESHIRE - Russell Edwin Baril, 89, passed away November 8, 2013 at the West Haven Veterans Hospital. He was the husband of Hazel (Adams) Baril. Mr. Baril was born February 18, 1924 in New Haven, the son of the late Adelard J. and Grace (Bibro) Baril. He attended public schools in Hamden and graduated from Hamden High School in 1942. He served his country during WWII in the United State Army Air Force in the operations section of the 4110th Bombardment Squadron of the 94th Bombardment Group of the Eighth Air Force in East Anglia, Suffolk, England for two and a half years, as well as serving one year in the United States. He graduated from the Junior College of Commerce (now Quinnipiac University) with an Associates Degree in Journalism in 1948, and was a graduate of New Haven State Teachers College in 1950. He earned his MA in Education from Yale in 1956. He taught for Branford and Hamden schools for one year each, and then taught in New Haven at Wexler School, Fair Haven Middle School and East Rock Community School for a total of 33 years in New Havens educational system before retiring in 1988. Mr. Baril founded the Army Air Force Roundtable in Cheshire in 1991. Under his leadership, a monument to all air force personnel who have died in the service of their country has been placed in the New England Air Museum in Windsor Locks. He took great pride in the establishment of the education endeavor which has sent veteran speakers to talk to students in scores of schools throughout the state in an effort to educate our young people concerning the sacrifices made by thousands of young Americans to preserve heritage, cultures and freedom. He was affiliated with several educational groups and with the American Legion and the Veterans of Foreign Wars. He was a member of the Temple Lodge in Cheshire for many years. Besides his wonderful wife, Mr. Baril is survived by his daughters Laurene and Donna of Cheshire; his son David and his wife Karen of Harwinton and his brother S. Kenneth Baril of Florida. He is predeceased by his daughter Roberta. Arrangements - Funeral services will be held on Saturday November 16, 2013 at 1 p.m. at the Alderson Funeral Home of Cheshire, 615 S. Main St. Burial will be held at the convenience of the family in Beaverdale Memorial Park and there are no calling hours.
