I was very shocked and saddened to read that Betsy had passed. Betsy had such a positive attitude and the ability to take any situation and figure out how to make it work. I had the privilege to work with Betsy at Laurel Ledge when I worked in Region 16 as a writing support instructor for four years. It was such fun to go into her classroom because of the loving, respectful and relaxed atmosphere. Betsy sincerely loved "her kids" and truly cared that each one made progress. It was also abundantly clear that her students felt the same love and respect for her. They always worked so hard to do and be their best for Mrs. Durkee. Years from now, they may forget certain curriculum facts from fourth grade that they learned from Mrs. Durkee but they will never, ever forget the way she made them feel. As a colleague, I know I won't. Rest in peace, sweet Betsy.

For the past 13 Years I, and my Husband Nate, have had the pleasure of sharing an annual Holiday Get Together with Betsy and her husband Steve. She was a very gracious host....making everyone feel comfortable and social. We would look forward to it year after year. She was full of stories about her past and present students, and when she spoke of her Teachings it was clear she enjoyed her profession! When the conversation included her son, she always had a proud grin upon her face. It was clear, The love of her only son was enormous! Betsy was very giving, always remembering my girls, at Birth, Birthdays and at Christmas time. She will be sadly missed by all who had the pleasure of knowing her!

I had Mrs. Durkee for 4th grade after shortly having another teacher. She welcomed me into her classroom with open arms and I thrived in her environment. I am 28 years old now and remember few of my elementary school teachers but Mrs. Durkee had a profound impact on me. She was kind hearted, passionate about her job and simply one of the best teachers I have come across. I am sad that children will not be able to experience her classroom for years to come. Rest in peace Mrs. Durkee and my condolences to her family. I really hope you all know how wonderful she was and her legacy will live on in her former students hearts for years.

My deepest condolences to your family. The first time I met Betsy was when my oldest daughter (Becca) received her as her as her 4th grade teacher 13 years ago, she had just started school and I had to go away to South Carolina as my father had a severe illness and was in a coma in the hospital, upon calling the school to check on my daughter and speaking with Betsy in our conversation she told me my daughter had told her I was away in Little River SC visiting my father in the hospital, well low and behold Betsy informed me her in laws lived in the same private community!! What a small world, at one point my parents wound up meeting her inlaws and ever since Betsy and I had a bond. She would go on to teach my other 2 daughters (Erika and Angela) and her hopes were to get my 4th daughter before she retired. To this day all 3 of my daughters who were blessed to have had her as thier teacher talk about her and the little stories should would tell about Steve and Michael and somehow she would work them into her teaching for the kids to remember alittle something and relate it to the funny story she would tell, she to this day is their favorite teacher of all time. She will forever be embedded in our hearts. May the good lord bless and watch over you during this difficult time. May it comfort you to know how much we all loved and adored her.

The sadness is deep and overwhelming for the beloved family, friends, and colleagues of Betsy. She made such heart-felt contributions to so many in her life. She will be missed and the emptiness will be impossible to fill. My deep felt sympathy and prayers go to Steve, Michael and the rest of her loving family. Rest in peace, my dear friend.

My heart goes out to Steve Durkee and the family for this very sad loss. It's somewhat difficult to express in words the sadness that I feel for them. The Durkees are very good and decent people. My prayers are with you through this difficult time. Betsy will truly be missed. Sincerely, Rick Bartsch
