Obituary of Douglas Heaven

Washington, CT - Douglas C. Heaven, 97, of Washington, a prominent certified public accountant in Waterbury, passed away at home on November 19, 2008. He was the husband of the late Bernice (Bussemey) Heaven. Mr. Heaven was born in Birmingham, England in 1911, the son of the late Charles and Gladys (Manton) Heaven. He graduated from Crosby High School in 1929 and was a graduate of Bentley College. He was a retired partner of Charles Heaven & Co, CPA's, of Waterbury, an accounting firm established by his father in 1922. He was also an owner of the Haven Manufacturing Co. in Bridgeport. He was a member of The Waterbury Rotary Club, a Paul Harris Fellow, a member of the Waterbury Lodge of Elks. He was a Master Mason and a member of the Scottish Rite Bodies, Valley of Bridgeport and a member of Cyrus Chapter No.45, R.A.M. of Torrington. In 1964 he was elected President of the Connecticut Society of CPA's, and in 1974 was appointed by Gov. Thomas Meskill to the State Board of Accountancy. An active member in community services he was also on The Waterbury Foundation Grants Committee for many years. Mr. Heaven, an avid golfer, was a member of the Waterbury Club, the Waterbury Country Club and the Washington Club. Mr. Heaven leaves his daughter, Penny H. Mahar of Canton, a son, Douglas Craig Heaven of Hollywood, Florida, four grandsons, Douglas D. Mahar and his wife Hilary of Newburyport, MA, Spencer C. Mahar and his wife Gayle of Wethersfield, Bradford Craig Heaven and Jonathan Douglas Heaven of Hollywood, Florida, and one great-grandson, Pacey Jamison Mahar of Wethersfield. He was predeceased by his brother Norman H. Heaven of Woodbury. Arrangements - A Memorial service will be held at St. John's Episcopal Church, in Washington on Thursday, December 4th at 1 p.m. Burial will held at the convenience of the family in Evergreen Cemetery in Watertown. In lieu of flowers contributions may be made to The Connecticut Community Foundation, 43 Field St., Waterbury, CT 06702. Alderson Funeral Home of Waterbury is in charge of arrangements.
