Obituary of Dorothy Johanson
Dorothy Marie Brandt Johanson died June 5, 2007, at home in her daughters house in Elk, Washington. She was 88 years old. She was the widow of Herbert T. Johanson, Sr. Dorothy was born January 25, 1919 in the house built by her grandfather at 130 Hill Street, Waterbury, Conn. Later the Brandt family moved to Oakville and then upon her marriage Dorothy made her home in Cheshire, then Hamden and then in No. Guilford where she raised their four children: Diane L. Olson of Leland, No.Carolina & Papau New Guinea; Herbert Johanson, Jr. of Clinton, Conn.; Joanne Lockwood of Elk, Washington and Ted A. Johanson of Clinton, Conn. Dorothy was a teachers helper at the No. Guilford Community Preschool and Guilfords Kiddie Kollege and cared for children in her home up until she reached the age of 80. She was a former volunteer at Saint Josephs Manor in Conn. For 38 years she was a member of Gospel Tabernacle in New Haven. She loved singing in the choir. In both Conn. and Va. she was a member of Aglow Christian Fellowship. Dorothy was a joyful and tireless woman of hospitality opening her home and heart to family and friends and guests from around the world. Over all her years she kept in constant correspondence with those whom she had come to cherish, handwriting informative and loving messages. She was a generous woman, a loving and devoted wife, a good and sweet mother and a faithful and precious friend. Dorothy spent her last years in Elk, Wa. at her daughter and son-in-laws country home enjoying time with the family there, fellowship at Country Church, and watching the awesome natural wonders out the big picture window of the front room or strolling the deck. Imagine now how wonderful her view from the edge of heaven! She is preceded in death by her husband Herbert T. Johanson Sr.; her best buddy, her elder brother Walter E. Brandt Jr. and her sweet sister Mildred Brandt Natalie. Dorothy was blessed to have seven grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. She leaves behind a most beloved sister Margie Collins of Waterbury and her dearest sister-in-law Gloria Brandt of same, her cousins, nieces, and nephews, and her dearest friends Rita Gustin of No.Branford, Ct. and Dottie Olson of Ft. Wayne, Indiana. Funeral services will be held Monday at 2 p.m. at the Slater Funeral Home 242 South Main St. Cheshire. Burial will be in New Pine Grove Cemetery in Waterbury.
