Obituary of Geddes Parsons

Geddes Parsons, 90, of Roxbury, husband of Leonie Parsons, died peacefully on Sunday December 9th.He was born at home in New Britain on November 3, 1917, the son of Charles B. and Marjorie Geddes Parsons. He attended Kingswood, Pomfret School, where he was captain of the baseball team, and Yale University. His business career included CT General, Allyn Russell & Allyn and P&F Corbin (American Hardware) in New Britain before becoming Business Manager of St. Margarets School (now Chase Collegiate) in Waterbury and then The Gunnery School. He was a member of the Shuttle Meadow Club, The Waterbury Club, the Fishers Island Club, Hay Harbor Club, the Catboat Association and the Essex Yacht Club. Through his love of sailing he was a Rear Commodore of Off Soundings and Commodore of the Fenwick Yacht Club. Throughout his lifetime he enjoyed the water whether at Fishers, Fenwick, Squam Lake or cruising on Crystal or Migeon P. Besides sailing his interests included gardening, cooking, golf, and community involvement. He served as a Corporator, beginning in 1951, then Director in 1959 and then Director of the Foundation of the American Savings Bank. He was on the Board of the Newington Childrens Hospital and in Roxbury he served on the Scholarship Committee, Board of Finance, Booth Free School Fund, the Library Board, The Cemetery Association and the Building Committee for the Roxbury Congreg ational Church. In 2005 he received the Roxbury Volunteer Appreciation Award. During his whole life he was a friend to everyone and above all else a gentleman. Besides his wife he leaves three daughters and their husbands, Sallie and Robert Boody of Old Saybrook, Edie and Skip Gengras of Bloomfield, Marfie and Joe Lavendier of Plainville; a step-son, J.O. White of Holderness, NH; a son-in-law, Mark Gengras of West Hartford; 8 grandchildren; 8 great-grandchildren; a brother Harris Parsons and his wife Elsie; 4 nephews and a niece. He was predeceased by a daughter, Julia Geddes Parsons. A memorial service will be held at 1:00 pm, Saturday, December 15 at the Roxbury Congregational Church, 24 Church Street (Rte 317), Roxbury, CT. The Alderson Funeral Home of Waterbury, 70 Central Ave. is in charge of arrangements. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the charity of ones choice.
