Obituary of Irving Hammer
Mr. Irving Bailey Hammer, 82, of 71 Pleasant Ave., died Saturday evening Jan. 5, 2008 at the Waterbury Hospital. He was the husband of Sylvia (Johnson) Hammer. Mr. Hammer was born in Boston, Mass., Oct. 15, 1925, a son of the late Alfred and Martha (Johnson) Hammer and been a Naugatuck resident since 1953. He was a retired Merchant Marine, having sailed for over 30 years, retiring from the Waterman Steamship Corp. He was a member of the Hillside Covenant Church. Besides his wife of 59 years, he leaves his children; Brian Charles Hammer of Georgia, Lynne Marie Tucker and her husband Gene of Cheshire, Rev. Carl Eric Hammer and his wife Mary Beth of Foster City, Mich., and Paul Irving Hammer and his wife, Jean of Vernon, Ct. ; 9 grandchildren and one great-grandson. He was predeceased by a brother Arthur Hammer, a sister, Margaret Distelrath and his twin brother, Marvin Hammer. A memorial service will be held on Wednesday at 2 p.m. at the Hillside Covenant Church, 100 Hillside Ave. A private burial will be held in Grove Cemetery, at the convenience of the family. There are no calling hours. The Alderson Funeral Home of Naugatuck, 201 Meadow St. is in charge of arrangements.
