Obituary of William Sachse
Cheshire, CT- William L. Sachse, 95, of Cook Hill Rd. and formerly of 4066 Whitney Ave. Hamden passed away Monday February 11, 2008 at Mid-State Medical Center in Meriden. He was the husband of Nancy (Davis) Sachse. Mr. Sachse was born March 22, 1912 in Morris, IL the son of the late Charles and Louise (Gebhardt) Sachse. He was a 1934 graduate of Yale University obtaining his Bachelors in History. He continued his education as a Rhodes Scholar at Oxford University obtaining a B Lit. He returned to Yale and in 1938 obtained his Doctorate in History. He taught at the University of Wisconsin for almost 40 years and was a WWII Navy veteran teaching in the U.S. Naval academy. Mr. Sachse was a long time Hamden resident moving to Cheshire several years ago. He was a member of St. Peters Episcopal Church in Cheshire, CT and enjoyed his summer home in S. Dennis, MA. He wrote and published a book of Cape Cods place names. He enjoyed sailing, gardening and was an animal lover. He was a member of the Sleeping Giant Park Assoc. Besides his wife of almost 70 years, Mr. Sachse is survived by his two sons, Richard Sachse and his wife Marylynne of Orono, Minnesota and William Sachse of Edgerton, WI; as well as a grandson Richard Sachse Jr.Arrangements A memorial service will be held on Thursday February 14, 2008 at 10 a.m. at St. Peters Episcopal Church, 59 Main St., Cheshire. Burial will be held at the convenience of the family and there are no calling hours. The Slater Funeral Home, 242 S. Main St., Cheshire, CT 06410 is in charge of arrangements.
