Obituary of Walter Marut

Cheshire - Walter M. Marut, 86 of 454 Oak Avenue, Cheshire, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, April 15, 2009 at Sharon Hospital in Sharon, in the company of his five children. He was the loving husband of the late Ann B. Marut, his wife of 56 years. Mr. Marut was born in Brooklyn, New York on October 8, 1922, the eldest son of the late John and Sophia Marut. He was predeceased by his brothers Emil and Anthony. He enlisted in the Army Air Corps during World War II and piloted a P-38 Lightning in the European Theater. Following the war, he served in the U.S. Air Force Reserves until June 1972, retiring as a Lt. Colonel. He graduated in 1949 from the University of Notre Dame with a B.S. degree in Aeronautical Engineering. He was employed at Pratt&Whitney Aircraft, Turner Construction Company, Plasticrete Corporation and the Archdiocese of Hartford. He was a longtime parishioner of St. Bridget Church, a member of the Legion of Mary and was involved in numerous volunteer organizations. Following retirement, he worked part-time for the Town of Cheshire as a devoted crossing guard at Highland Elementary School for 12 years. Walter Marut leaves five children, Michael Marut of Fairfax, Virginia, Christopher Marut of Annandale, Virginia; Margaret Thomas of Dublin California, Paula Carlaccini of South Burlington, Vermont, and Sarah Zordan of Torrington. He is also survived by 13 grandchildren. Arrangements - Funeral services will be held Saturday April 18, 2009 9:15 from the Slater Funeral Home, 242 South Main Street, Cheshire, to St. Bridget Church for Mass at 10 a.m. Burial will follow in St. Bridget Cemetery. Calling hours will be Friday from 5 to 8 p.m. Memorial contributions may be made to an organization of the donor's choice.
