Adela was a teacher and mentor for me at MacDermid when I was a newly graduated chemist in 1979-82. Her patience and kindness with me were something I have remembered for 35 years. Her help in bringing me from novice to experienced chemist brought some of the most valuable assets of my career. She also taught me some words of wisdom from old sayings that are proving more and more true as my life goes by. An odd one that must not have translated well, however, is that love is not like a potato, you cannot throw it out the window. All I could think of was "who throws potatoes out the window", and it reminds me of the joy and pleasure of working in the same lab as her. She was a friend and an asset to everyone around her.

I need to start by saying I was very fortunate to meet Mrs. Adela Landau, and for me, she will always be my sweet friend, Adela. I work at Mr.& Mrs. Landau's doctor's office, and when I would see that they were coming in, my spirits were lifted. I first met Mr. & Mrs. Landau in 2007, and I immediately admired the love and admiration shared between Mr. & Mrs. Landau. To me, they proved that the little things in life really do go a long way such as Mr. Landau hanging up Mrs. Landau's coat as she visited with me during the check-in process. During those brief moments at the check-in desk, Mrs. Landau was always sure to ask me how I was and how life was treating me. She shared in my joy when I told her I got engaged, and was excited to see my wedding pictures. She even made it a point to keep me informed of her grandson Scott and his girlfriend (now fiance), Sarah. In fact, when she first asked me what my name was she said, "Oh we have a Sarah in our family too!" I remember her telling me that Scott and Sarah lived together but had no plans to marry, and that she kept asking them when they would be married! I had to chuckle because I too was in the same situation with my, Peter, and we too had our families wondering when we would eventually get married. Mrs. Landau talked about Scott and Sarah so much that I feel I know them even though I never met them. Then came the day that Mrs. Landau brought me a gift. A gift from Japan! She told me that she had told her daughter, Barbara, to buy me a gift on one of her business trips! As if Barbara does not have enough going on during those trips, right? Anyways, proudly displayed at my work station are two little good luck kitties that Mrs. Adela Landau gave me thanks to Barbara. To both Barbara and Victor, you have both done an amazing job caring for your parents. I know it must be one of life's greatest challenges, and caring for our parents is the one of those things we do not often think about. I am envious of your strength and dedication to your parents and their health needs. You are setting a great example not only for your peers, but for the next generation of your family. I also feel fortunate to have met you both. May your memories make your day as bright as my sweet friend, Adela, made mine. Sincerely, Sarah

My dearest family - Edward, Barbara, Victor, George, Sean, Scott, Katie, Jessie and Sarah
For the past 58 years when I talk or think about you all I always think Ala and Edward.that's the way it has been for my entire life.
I don't think about one without the other...
Words fail to express the depth of emotion and loss that I and your family in Australia feel at this time. A time when our hearts unite in grief and sadness at the passing of a lady who in our family holds iconic status. Ala I look at your picture and see such strength, passion and determination that it is hard to believe you have passed away.
I have so many memories of Ala from the visits I made mostly to the Reynolds Street, Connecticut family home since my first visit in 1971.
Ala was a mover and shaker - a doer! She ran the household with an iron fist, looked after everyone's well being, worked professionally and led a busy social life.
I loved her cooking, breakfasts at Reynolds Street, matzah pancakes, chicken soup, rice dishes sitting around that round table in the kitchen. I also recall for some silly reason her consuming large amounts of vitamin C. At one time when I returned to Australia I told everyone about the fact that you can take Vitamin C in powder form and my Aunt Ala swears by it for her good health!!! We all know she loved self medicating and diagnosing - I think that may be a family trait!
At a time when many post war migrant women stayed at home, raised a family and supported their husbands, Ala carved out a career that spanned 20 years leaving behind a professional legacy that stands to this day. She was a smart and progressive woman.
Ala's pride and joy though was her family and the love of her life - her husband of 60 years Edward. Together Ala and Edward lived with Barbara and Victor in the Connecticut house, went skiing and on family holidays photos of which I always received copies and treasure.
Edward, Ala worshipped the ground you walked on she loved you so much. Your devotion to each other despite times when you turned your hearing aid down, is something I will never forget and is a living example for the entire family.
On my visits Ala and Edward would sit with me looking through photo albums. Ala always spoke with such pride of her greatest achievements as a mother - Barbara and Victor. My beautiful cousins -we have been close all our lives as a result of the letter writing encouraged so much by both Ala and Edward and my parents. With modern technology we have email, facebook and of course now talk so often.
You are the product of the love, commitment and devotion of your parents to promoting your lives and supporting you through thick and thin. I know Ala is just so proud of the wonderful people you are and of your achievements with your families, your lives and work. The diligent way in which you have so lovingly cared for your parents, the move to New Hampshire, the vigil you have kept over the past weeks is testimony to your upbringing and the fine people you are. You couldn't have done any better. I love you guys so much and so wish I was there with you now.
In the past 20+ years Ala's pride and joy has been her wonderful grandchildren, Sean, Scott, Katie and Jessie. She loved you guys so much and always talked about you when I visited - not missing a beat about who you were dating, what you were studying and how beautiful you all are. And although she won't be there physically, I know Scottie and Sarah she will be there in spirit when you marry in July.
My mother Marysia is so sad at the loss of her beautiful sister-in-law. Edward my Mom sends you, Barbara, Victor and the entire family her heart felt prayers and wishes.
So my beautiful Alinka as my late father used to call you - I hope you are with my Dad now. We miss you so much already but know that now you are at peace, no more pain and suffering. Thank you for a lifetime of memories, for your love and devotion. Our birthdays in May, only 4 days apart will never be the same without you. I have never forgotten and never will. You and I always shared a quiet moment each year over our birthdays - I will remember those conversations for ever.
Good bye Alinka. I love you and always will.
Anne
