I only knew Bob professionally, but I like to think of him as a friend. I have worked with him periodically since 2001, and have always enjoyed the experience. My most vivid memory of Bob is from an annual railroad conference we both attended in Palm Springs each winter. The weather was always delightful, and the resort was spectacular. I saw Bob multitasking on the porch of the bungalow he was renting; while enjoying the beautiful surroundings, he was answering E-mails on his laptop with one hand, talking on his cell phone with the other, and waving me over to ask a railcar question by nodding his head. He will be missed.

I'm not sure what's appropriate in a public forum, but our memories of Bob at ATO MIT are just too much fun not to share. Please accept my condolences and fond thoughts of Bob for his family. I still remember his infectious humor and spirit, as well as the fact that he was the most accident-prone guy in the house. When Bob first landed in New England, he was known for making snow angels in that substance which he had never seen. I had hoped to reconnect with Bob once I retired, and revisit more train adventures. I came to MIT cross country on a train myself. I will miss Bob, but never forget him. - Gregg Dieguez
