Dear Bill, Shirley, Jennifer and Peter, I am very sorry for your loss. I don't know how to express the affect that Mike had on my life except to say that he was an exceptional friend. He was unique--even among friends--in that he never demanded anything from me. To tell you the truth, I don't even remember him ever asking for anything from me. He only gave. He was ahead of the curve in all aspects: he introduced me to computers (and computer games,) the music of our generation, skateboarding and countless other innovations/innovative practices. He allowed me to grow up knowing that he would always be there for me, even when I let him down. I remember so much, all of a sudden--the good times we had--going to watch WWF wrestling matches on closed-circuit television, classes that we shared at Chase School and Wallace Middle School and all of the days and nights that I spent at your house in Waterbury. I have only saved about twenty photos from the first 25 years of my life, and two of them are of Michael. I have uploaded them to my Facebook page so that people that knew Michael can remember him. Please email me if you would like the photos. I can also check to see if my parents have any photos of Michael. I don't know if they have any, but I am sure that they would be more than happy to send them to you. Love, Bilal

I just wanted to say that I am so sorry for the loss of Mike. He was one of the most unique people that I've known in this lifetime. We became close friends during our senior year at Crosby High, and I still have great memories of the times we spent hanging out during the summer of 1992. I'm thankful that I had the honor of being his date at our senior prom, and glad I got to know the fun, talented, and kind guy that he was under that seemingly quiet and shy exterior. Although I hadn't seen Mike in several years, I would think of him randomly, and always smile. Again, I'm sorry for the loss of Mike.

Michael Hammel was, and I'm sure, will always be one of the kindest, most helpful, soft spoken, good natured, intelligent, optimistic people I have ever had the privilege of knowing. Mike embodied all of the qualities of what it means to be a good person. I've known Mike for roughly 10 years and found in him a friend I could depend on and open up to. In this time I never heard him complain about anything or speak negatively about any person. This alone, to me, made Mike quite special and inspiring. Mike loved living and was so enthusiastic about everything he enjoyed. He recently started taking guitar lessons to further his talent and spoke boisterously of how much better a musician he would be by the end of Summer. He was still growing and seeking with the heart of a child. Just seeing his excitement was a joy for me. There is a hole in my life where a beautiful person used to live. Mike, I will hold you there dearly for the rest of my life. I wish you were here to be my friend some more and hope to join you again someday.. somehow. My deepest regrets and comforts to his Mom, Dad & Sister. I am Very sorry for your loss. Patrick Palmer
