Obituary of George Gilchrist
WATERBURY; Mr. George R. Gilchrist 81, of Waterbury passed away Sunday October 17, 2010 at his home. He was the husband of the late Doris M. (Ackerman) Gilchrist, who were married for 59 years.
Mr. Gilchrist was born April 17, 1929 in Waterbury a son of the late Samuel and Elizabeth Gilchrist and was a lifelong area resident. He was educated in Waterbury schools and attended Croft High School. He was a police officer for the City of Waterbury beginning his career in 1952. In September of 1965 he was promoted to Sergeant, in April of 1972 he was promoted to Lieutenant and in April of 1992 he retired after 40 years of service. He was a member of the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks Lodge #265 of Waterbury, Compass Lodge #9 A.F. & A.M. of Wallingford and was a longtime member of the Waterbury Draft Board. Mr. Gilchrist was a member of the First Congregational Church of Waterbury.
He leaves his daughters, Linda Gilchrist of Coventry and Deborah Gilchrist-Blais of Westfield, PA, five grandchildren and two great grandchildren. He was predeceased by his daughter Laurie B. Wence. He also leaves his two special angels, Judy and Gayle.
Funeral services for Mr. Gilchrist will be held Wednesday October 20, 2010 at 10 a.m. at the Alderson Funeral Home of Waterbury 9 Holmes Avenue. Burial with Waterbury Police Departmental honors will follow in Evergreen Cemetery in Watertown. There are no calling hours.
