Obituary of Sterling Jewett
Mr. Sterling M. Jewett, age 95, formerly of Cheshire died May 26, 2011 at Masonicare Health Center, Wallingford Ct. He was the husband of the late Jean (Preston) Jewett. Mr. Jewett was born in Bridgeport, CT., September 9, 1915, son of the late Harry F. Jewett and Isabelle (Turner) Jewett.
He was a graduate of Cheshire Grammar School (1930), Hillhouse High School (1934), and Denison University in Granville, Ohio (1940). During World War II he served two years in England and France in the U.S. Army. For 31 years he and his wife owned and operated the Jewett Insurance Agency which was founded by his father in 1927.
He served on the Cheshire Nurses Committee and the Cheshire Performing and Fine Arts Committee. He was a member of St.Peter's Episcopal Church, Temple Lodge Number 16, The Cheshire Grange, a charter member of the Cheshire Exchange Club, and the Veterans of Foreign Wars. He received community service awards from many local organizations.
Throughout his life he was an active musician and played the piano, organ, violin, fife and other instruments. He played in The Mattatuck Drum Band, the Bristol Symphony Orchestra, The Cheshire Symphony Orchestra, the Bristol Old Time Fiddle Club and the Al Root Band.
He leaves two daughters, Lynn J. Voelker and her husband, retired Judge Raymond F. Voelker of Cheshire; Barbara Jewett of Beaufort, NC; two grandsons, Michael S Brode and his wife, Jessica of Cincinnati, OH, and James W. Brode and his wife Adrianne of Spring, TX, and a granddaughter Emily Voelker Vlasak and her husband Anthony Vlasak of Jersey City, NJ. He has four great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by his wife, his twin brother, Stiles T. Jewett of Palos Park, IL, and his sisters Ruth Henrickson of Manchester, CT and Thelma Holt of Basking Ridge, NJ, and a grandson, Raymond F. Voelker III of Cheshire.
There will be a Memorial Service at Pond Ridge in Ashlar Village in Wallingford on Saturday June 18 at 2 p.m. Burial will be at the family's convenience. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Ashlar Village Scholarship Fund, 74 Cheshire Road, Wallingford, CT 06492. The Alderson Funeral Home of Cheshire has care of arrangements.
