I was watching the movie "Seabiscuit" last night, and when I saw the jockey Red Pollard reading classic literature and quoting from Shakespeare, I was reminded of my High School English teacher and coach Dick Massey. So I googled him in effort to re-connect, when I found his obituary. I was truely saddened to read that he had passed on last summer. I played soccer and baseball for Coach Massey at Conard High School in West Hartford, Connecticut. He was also my English teacher junior year. When my father passed on that year, he mentored me and helped me get into Syracuse University by writing a recommendation. After I graduated in 1966, I sent him a note while in College, and he responded with a letter encouraging me not to forget the classics of literature in the haste of our everyday lives. I still have the letter, and I so wanted to fill him in on my life and family. Dick Massey was a great teacher, coach, and friend and I will always remember him.

Time slips by. Last year I intended to visit New Haven with the prime purpose of spending some time with Dick. I didn't make it. I will miss him every day. He had a warm and inspiring aura about him that affected me and will continue to affect me deeply. My condolences to the family and to all of us who knew him and loved him.
