Obituary of Richard Massey
NAUGATUCK- Mr. Richard Sargent Massey, 75 of Naugatuck, passed away Sunday afternoon June 12,201l at his home. He was the husband of Dr. Roberta Anderson Massey.
Mr. Massey was born in New Haven, Feb. 6, 1936, the son of the late Samuel J. and Beatrice (Sargent) Massey and was educated at the Hopkins School. He received his B.A. degree from Yale College and his M.A. degree also from Yale University and received his Certification as a Chartered Life Underwriter and Chartered Financial Consultant from The American College in Bryn Mawr, PA. Following graduation from Yale, he spent 7 years as a educator and coach at Concord High School in West Hartford. He then worked for Conn. General Life Insurance Co. of Conn. , and Sun Life of Canada Insurance Co. for over 12 years. He then opened his own business, Massey Financial Services in 1978, which he continued to operate with his son.
Dick was a member and Past President of New Haven County Chapter, C.L.U., the Exchange Club of Orange, The Conn. Badminton Assoc., and Racebrook Game Club. He served as a Director the Racebrook Country Club, the Coordinating Council for Children in Crisis, and the Northeast Pension Services, Ltd. He was a member of the Country Club of Waterbury, the Junior-Senior Golfing Society of Conn., the Yale Golf Club, the Morey's Assoc., the Yale Club of New Haven, the National Assoc. of Life Underwriters, the American Society of C.L.U., CHFC, the Gold Key Society, the Million Dollar Roundtable Foundation, and the International Assoc. of Financial Planners.
Besides his wife, he leaves his children, a son, Steven Alexander Massey, a daughter, Laurel Anne Leibowitz and her husband Steven; his extended family Bryan and Suzanne Atwood, Kristin and David Generali, and Amy and Andrew Kvaal; 10 grandchildren, Katherine Massey, Jennifer, Brian, and Kaitlyn Leibowitz, Ava Atwood, Trey, Ella and Reeve Generali and Caroline and Cecilia Kvaal. He also leaves his former wife Jane Burr Massey. He was predeceased by a son Brian Burr Massey.
Funeral services will be held on Thursday June 16, 2011 at 10 am at the Congregational Church of Naugatuck, 9 Division St. Burial will follow in Union Cemetery, Cemetery Rd., Union, CT. Friends may call at the Massey residence on Wednesday June 15, 2011 from 5 to 8 pm. The Alderson Funeral Home of Naugatuck, 201 Meadow St. is in charge of arrangements. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Hopkins School Scholarship Program, 986 Forest Rd., New Haven, CT 06515-2501.
