Obituary of Brian D. Nugent

CHESHIRE – Brian D. Nugent, 57, passed away peacefully Saturday, Oct. 4th , 2014 at the Smilow Cancer Center, New Haven, with his family by his side and in his heart. He was the loving, devoted husband and best friend of Catherine “Kiki” (Nichols) Nugent. Brian was born September 16, 1957 in New Haven, the son of the late Arthur J. and Mary (Vaughan) Nugent. A longtime Cheshire resident, he was a communicant of St. Thomas Becket Church. Brian was the proud and loving father of seven children: Daniel (Amanda), Joshua, Brian R, Casey, Cody, Timothy and Mary Margaret. He was committed to his children and supported them in all they did in church, education and sports. He devoted many years to coaching youth football, basketball and tried his hand coaching softball this year for the first time as his only daughter decided to play. He has left his mark on the youth of Cheshire and fellow coaches. He will be fondly remembered by them. A 1975 graduate of West Haven HS, Brian excelled in football. A three-year starter, he was a tri-captain in 1974, an All District selection in ’73 and ’74 and a second team All State selection in ’73. He concluded his career with a prestigious first team New Haven Register All-State selection and was the recipient of the coach’s award. He was inducted into the West Haven Hall of Fame, as an individual, in 2013. He also played lacrosse for West Haven HS, starting all four years and was named a tri-captain in ’74. Brian graduated from the University of New Haven in 1979 with a B.S. degree in Sociology. While there he played football and was named MVP in ’77 and ’78 and athlete of the year in ’78. He gave back to the school in his role as assistant football coach in ’79 and ’80. In 1979 Brian opened Nugent’s Potbelly Luncheonette in West Haven before joining the West Haven police department. For 13 years, Brian worked at Sikorsky Aircraft in Human Resources Management & Labor Relations. From 2001 until his death, Brian was a corporate Ombudsman at United Technologies Corp, Hartford, CT. He enjoyed the challenge of that position and the social interaction involved. Besides his wife Kiki and children, Brian is survived by his sister, Debra Johnston and her husband Carroll; his brothers, Arthur and his wife Claire, Gerard and Kevin; granddaughters, Vivienne and Scarlett; his mother in law, Lou Nichols as well as many in-laws, nieces, nephews and friends. Brian’s deep love for God and unshakable faith carried him through his life and comforted him throughout his illness. He truly believed in God’s love for him and the rewards that awaited him in Heaven. The entire family wishes to express their gratitude to all the staff at the Smilow Cancer Centers and our friends and extended family, for the care Brian received. Together they guided and supported Brian through this difficult journey. Arrangements - A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Friday October 10, 2014 at 10 a.m. at St. Thomas Becket Church, 435 Brooksvale Rd., Cheshire. Friends are asked to meet directly at church.
